Having phlegm in the throat for several years?

Hello doctor, I have had phlegm in my throat since high school, and it persists to this day.
Sometimes I experience nasal congestion, and the phlegm is clear and colorless.
However, after eating or drinking certain foods, the phlegm changes color to match that of the food, and after a while, I feel the need to go to the bathroom to vomit because I'm unsure if swallowing it is good for my body.
This is quite bothersome.
What could be the cause of this? Thank you.

Hello, you may be experiencing chronic pharyngitis, which is often related to post-nasal drip or gastroesophageal reflux.
It is recommended that you visit an otolaryngologist or a gastroenterologist for an examination.
Wishing you peace and good health.

More Info

Persistent phlegm in the throat can be a frustrating and uncomfortable condition, and it often raises concerns about underlying health issues. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing this symptom for a long time, with the phlegm being clear and sometimes changing color based on the food you consume. This can be indicative of several potential causes.

Possible Causes
1. Post-Nasal Drip: One of the most common causes of persistent phlegm is post-nasal drip, where mucus from the nasal passages drips down the back of the throat. This can occur due to allergies, sinus infections, or even irritants in the environment. The mucus can be clear or colored, depending on the underlying cause.

2. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): GERD can lead to the production of excess mucus as the body attempts to protect the throat from stomach acid. This can result in a sensation of phlegm in the throat, especially after eating.

3. Chronic Bronchitis: If you are a smoker or have been exposed to irritants, chronic bronchitis could be a factor. This condition leads to inflammation of the airways and increased mucus production.

4. Food Sensitivities or Allergies: Certain foods can trigger mucus production in some individuals. If you notice that your symptoms worsen after consuming specific foods, it may be worth investigating potential food allergies or sensitivities.

5. Infections: Viral or bacterial infections can lead to increased mucus production. If you have had a recent cold or respiratory infection, this could explain your symptoms.

Solutions and Recommendations
1. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated can help thin the mucus, making it easier to expel. Drinking plenty of water, herbal teas, or broths can be beneficial.

2. Steam Inhalation: Inhaling steam can help loosen mucus in the throat and nasal passages. You can do this by taking a hot shower or using a bowl of hot water with a towel over your head.

3. Saline Nasal Rinse: Using a saline nasal spray or rinse can help clear mucus from the nasal passages and reduce post-nasal drip.

4. Avoid Irritants: If you smoke or are exposed to secondhand smoke, consider quitting or reducing exposure. Additionally, try to avoid allergens and irritants in your environment.

5. Dietary Adjustments: If you suspect certain foods are contributing to your symptoms, consider keeping a food diary to track what you eat and any corresponding changes in your symptoms. This can help identify potential triggers.

6. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given that you have been experiencing this issue for a long time, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, allergy testing, or imaging studies if necessary. They can also provide tailored treatment options based on your specific situation.

Conclusion
Persistent phlegm in the throat can stem from various causes, including post-nasal drip, GERD, chronic bronchitis, food sensitivities, or infections. While there are several home remedies and lifestyle changes that may help alleviate your symptoms, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional for a comprehensive evaluation and personalized treatment plan. Addressing the underlying cause is key to finding relief and improving your quality of life.
