Throat issues
Hello Doctor: About a month ago, I got pricked by a fish bone.
I didn't seek medical attention immediately and went about two days later.
Since then, I've had X-rays, a CT scan, and an endoscopy, but no bone was found.
However, today while eating mapo tofu, I suddenly felt a sharp pain in my throat.
After taking a sip of water, it felt better, but I was too afraid to eat more.
I can eat other foods without pain.
Is it possible that a fish bone is still stuck in my throat, or could it be something else?

Hello: Generally, having a fishbone stuck in the throat often causes persistent pain.
If the pain improves quickly, it may be less likely to be a fishbone issue.
It is advisable to observe the situation first; however, if the pain persists, a medical evaluation is necessary for further examination.
Wishing you safety and good health.
Sincerely, Dr.

It sounds like you've been experiencing some discomfort in your throat after a fish bone incident about a month ago. While it's understandable to be concerned about the possibility of a fish bone still being lodged in your throat, there are several factors to consider that may help clarify your situation.
First, it's important to note that fish bones can sometimes cause irritation or injury to the throat even after they have been removed or if they were never lodged there in the first place. The fact that you've undergone X-rays, a CT scan, and an endoscopy without any findings of a foreign body is reassuring. These imaging techniques are quite effective at identifying foreign objects, and the absence of a fish bone in these tests suggests that it is unlikely that one is still stuck in your throat.
The sudden pain you experienced while eating mapo tofu could be attributed to a few different factors. One possibility is that the texture or temperature of the food may have irritated your throat, especially if there was any residual inflammation from the initial injury. Spicy or hot foods can sometimes exacerbate throat discomfort, particularly if there was any prior trauma. Additionally, the act of swallowing can sometimes cause a sensation of pain if there is lingering irritation in the throat.
Another consideration is the possibility of a condition known as "globus sensation," where individuals feel a lump or tightness in their throat without any actual obstruction. This can occur after an injury or irritation and may be exacerbated by anxiety or stress about the initial incident. If your throat feels fine when eating other foods, it may indicate that the discomfort is not due to a physical obstruction but rather a reaction to specific foods or a lingering sensitivity.
If you continue to experience pain or discomfort, it would be wise to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further evaluation or treatment options, such as anti-inflammatory medications or throat lozenges to help soothe any irritation. Additionally, if you notice any worsening symptoms, such as difficulty swallowing, persistent pain, or signs of infection (like fever or swelling), you should seek medical attention promptly.
In summary, while the possibility of a fish bone still being lodged in your throat is low given the negative imaging results, it's essential to consider other factors that could be contributing to your discomfort. Monitoring your symptoms and consulting with a healthcare professional if they persist will help ensure that you receive appropriate care and peace of mind.
