Regarding the use and discontinuation of Yaz?
Hello Doctor: I have been taking Yaz for over a year, and my menstrual cycle has been stable, with my previous menstrual pain resolved.
However, I just realized that my period will coincide with my upcoming trip from January 26 to February 1 (I started my period on December 30, so I will start again on January 27).
I would like to ask you a few questions:
1.
If I want to delay my period for a few days (at least until after January 30, since I have a hot spring trip planned), how should I adjust my medication? (I have already opened a new pack and taken one pink pill.)
Additionally, I have two questions regarding stopping the medication:
1.
When would be the most appropriate time to discontinue the medication?
2.
I originally had menstrual pain, which has not returned since I started taking the pill.
Is there a possibility that the pain will return after I stop taking it?
Thank you very much for your assistance with these three questions!

When it comes to managing Yaz (a combination birth control pill) to delay menstruation, there are a few key points to consider. Yaz contains ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone, which work together to prevent ovulation and regulate the menstrual cycle. If you want to delay your period for your upcoming trip from January 26 to February 1, you can do so by continuing to take the active pills in your current pack without taking the placebo pills. Here’s how you can manage your situation:
1. Delaying Your Period: Since you have already started a new pack and taken one active pill, you can continue taking the active pills until you reach your desired date. In your case, if you want to delay your period until after January 30, you can continue taking the active pills until then. After that, you can either stop taking the pills or switch to the placebo pills, depending on how long you want to delay your period. It’s important to note that this method is generally safe for most women, but it’s always best to consult with your healthcare provider to ensure it’s appropriate for your specific health situation.
2. Stopping Yaz: If you decide to stop taking Yaz after your trip, it’s generally recommended to finish the current pack before discontinuing. This means you should take all the active pills and then the placebo pills before stopping. This approach helps to maintain hormonal balance and minimizes any potential withdrawal symptoms.
3. Potential Return of Menstrual Symptoms: Regarding your concern about the return of menstrual cramps after stopping Yaz, it is possible that your original symptoms may return. Yaz is often prescribed to alleviate menstrual pain and other symptoms associated with menstruation. Once you discontinue the pill, your body will revert to its natural hormonal cycle, which may include the return of menstrual cramps. However, every individual’s experience can vary. Some women find that their menstrual symptoms improve over time, while others may experience a return of symptoms similar to what they had before starting the pill.
In summary, to delay your period for your trip, continue taking the active pills and skip the placebo pills until you reach your desired date. When you decide to stop taking Yaz, it’s best to finish the pack and then take a break. Be aware that the return of menstrual cramps is a possibility, but individual experiences may vary. Always consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and to address any specific concerns you may have regarding your health and medication management.
