Fast Heartbeat and Throat Sensation After Bending: What to Know - Cardiology

There is a foreign body sensation in the throat and a rapid heartbeat?

Hello doctor, ever since I gave birth, sometimes when I squat down—or rather, when I lean forward as if picking something up—I suddenly feel something rise in my throat, and then my heart starts racing very fast to the point where I can’t catch my breath.
However, after resting for about half an hour to an hour, I suddenly feel better.
This has been happening during the winter, and the most intense feeling is when I sense something rising in my throat followed by a rapid heartbeat, but it doesn’t feel quite like the burning sensation associated with gastroesophageal reflux.
I asked a pediatrician, and they suggested that I might just be anemic and advised me to exercise more.
If I want to see a doctor, which specialty should I consult?

Liu, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/01/03

Dr. Lin Jixiong reply Cardiology

Hello: When squatting down and then standing up, it is common to experience some palpitations and shortness of breath.
Slowing down may help improve these symptoms.

More Info

Experiencing a fast heartbeat and a sensation of something rising in your throat after bending or leaning forward can be concerning, especially after childbirth. This symptom can be attributed to several factors, including physiological changes post-pregnancy, anxiety, or even gastrointestinal issues. Let's break down the potential causes and what you should consider doing next.

Possible Causes
1. Postural Changes: When you bend or lean forward, the position can affect your diaphragm and the pressure in your abdomen. This can lead to a sensation of tightness in the throat or chest, which may trigger a fast heartbeat due to the body's stress response.

2. Anxiety and Panic Attacks: After childbirth, many women experience anxiety or panic attacks, which can manifest as a rapid heartbeat and a feeling of something stuck in the throat. This is often accompanied by shortness of breath and a sense of impending doom.

3. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): While you mentioned that it doesn't feel like classic heartburn, GERD can still cause sensations in the throat and may lead to a fast heartbeat due to discomfort or anxiety about the symptoms.

4. Anemia: As your pediatrician suggested, anemia can lead to fatigue and a rapid heartbeat, especially if your body is not getting enough oxygen. This is common in postpartum women due to blood loss during delivery or nutritional deficiencies.

5. Thyroid Issues: Hyperthyroidism can cause symptoms like a rapid heartbeat and anxiety. It’s worth checking your thyroid levels, especially if you have other symptoms like weight changes or mood swings.

Recommendations
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given your symptoms, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider. Since your symptoms involve both the cardiovascular system (rapid heartbeat) and potential gastrointestinal issues (throat sensation), you might consider seeing a primary care physician first. They can evaluate your symptoms and refer you to a specialist if necessary.

2. Cardiologist: If your primary care physician deems it necessary, they may refer you to a cardiologist to rule out any heart-related issues, especially since you are experiencing a significant increase in heart rate.

3. Gastroenterologist: If your symptoms are more aligned with gastrointestinal issues, a gastroenterologist can help assess for conditions like GERD or other digestive disorders.

4. Blood Tests: It may be beneficial to have blood tests done to check for anemia, thyroid function, and other potential deficiencies that could be contributing to your symptoms.

5. Lifestyle Modifications: In the meantime, consider lifestyle modifications such as staying hydrated, eating smaller meals, and avoiding triggers that may exacerbate your symptoms. Gentle exercises and relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or yoga, may also help manage anxiety and improve your overall well-being.

6. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a diary of your symptoms, noting when they occur, their intensity, and any associated activities. This information can be invaluable for your healthcare provider in diagnosing the issue.

Conclusion
Your symptoms of a fast heartbeat and throat sensation after bending could stem from various causes, including anxiety, postural changes, or gastrointestinal issues. It’s essential to consult a healthcare provider to get a comprehensive evaluation and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help manage your symptoms effectively and improve your quality of life. Remember, postpartum changes can take time to stabilize, and seeking help is a positive step towards feeling better.
