Frequent abdominal pain and diarrhea?
Hello doctor, I have been experiencing frequent abdominal pain lately, but it improves after having a bowel movement or passing gas (for about 1 to 2 months).
Today at noon, after eating, I had another episode of diarrhea and my stomach hurt a lot, but it felt better afterward.
However, when I wiped, there was a small amount of blood on the toilet paper (my menstrual period just ended 2 days ago).

Dr. Ke Fangxu reply Surgery
Based on your description, it seems more like a gastrointestinal function issue.
I recommend starting with a light diet and maintaining a good daily routine.
Spicy, irritating, and greasy foods should be avoided.
Increasing your intake of plant fiber can also be beneficial.
If symptoms persist without improvement, you may want to consult a physician for medication.

More Info
Frequent abdominal pain accompanied by diarrhea can be quite distressing and may indicate a variety of underlying conditions. Given your description, it seems that your symptoms have been ongoing for about one to two months, with pain alleviating after bowel movements. The presence of blood on the toilet paper after wiping, especially following your menstrual period, adds another layer of complexity to your situation.
Possible Causes
1. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): This is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain and altered bowel habits, including diarrhea. Stress and dietary factors often exacerbate symptoms. Given that your pain improves after bowel movements, IBS could be a potential diagnosis.
2. Gastroenteritis: This condition, often caused by viral or bacterial infections, can lead to abdominal pain, diarrhea, and sometimes blood in the stool. If you have experienced any recent changes in diet, travel, or exposure to contaminated food or water, this could be a possibility.
3. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): Conditions like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. These are more serious conditions that require medical evaluation and management.
4. Hemorrhoids or Anal Fissures: If you are experiencing pain during bowel movements or if the blood is bright red, it could be due to hemorrhoids or anal fissures, which are common and often associated with straining during bowel movements.
5. Gynecological Issues: Given that you mentioned your menstrual cycle, it’s worth considering that conditions such as endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease could cause abdominal pain that may mimic gastrointestinal issues.
Recommended Actions
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: It’s crucial to discuss your symptoms with a healthcare professional, especially since you are experiencing blood in your stool. They may recommend tests such as stool analysis, blood tests, or imaging studies to rule out serious conditions.
2. Dietary Modifications: Keeping a food diary can help identify any dietary triggers that may be contributing to your symptoms. Common triggers include dairy, gluten, and high-fat foods.
3. Stress Management: Since stress can exacerbate IBS and other gastrointestinal issues, consider incorporating stress-reducing techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, or regular exercise into your routine.
4. Hydration and Electrolyte Balance: Frequent diarrhea can lead to dehydration. Ensure you are drinking plenty of fluids and consider electrolyte solutions if diarrhea persists.
5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms, including the frequency of abdominal pain, diarrhea, and any other associated symptoms like fever or weight loss. This information will be valuable for your healthcare provider.
Conclusion
While your symptoms may be indicative of a benign condition such as IBS, the presence of blood in your stool warrants further investigation to rule out more serious conditions. It is essential to seek medical advice promptly to ensure appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Remember, early intervention can lead to better management of your symptoms and overall health.
