There is a hard lump in the armpit?
Hello doctor, a few days ago I developed a large hard lump under my left armpit, approximately the size of two finger joints, located just below the armpit and closer to the chest.
It has been painful enough to wake me up at night.
Over the past few days, it seems to be gradually getting smaller and appears to be slightly draining.

I would like to ask if this will eventually go away on its own or if I need to seek medical attention quickly.

It's just an abscess; it will heal once the pus is drained.

When it comes to hard lumps under the armpit, it is essential to understand the potential causes and the appropriate steps to take. The lump you described, which is large, painful, and located near the chest, could be indicative of several conditions, ranging from benign to more serious issues.
Firstly, the lump could be a swollen lymph node. Lymph nodes can become enlarged due to infections, inflammation, or even malignancies. Given that you mentioned the lump has been painful and has shown signs of possible drainage, it could suggest an infection, such as a localized abscess or a condition like hidradenitis suppurativa, which is characterized by painful lumps in areas where skin rubs together.
In many cases, if the lump is due to an infection, it may resolve on its own as your body fights off the infection. However, if the lump is persistent, continues to grow, or is associated with other symptoms such as fever, night sweats, or unexplained weight loss, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. These symptoms could indicate a more serious underlying condition that requires further evaluation.
If the lump is indeed an abscess, it may need to be drained by a healthcare professional. This procedure can relieve pain and prevent further complications. Additionally, if there is a suspicion of a more serious condition, such as lymphoma or another type of cancer, further diagnostic imaging (like an ultrasound or CT scan) and possibly a biopsy may be necessary to determine the nature of the lump.
In summary, while some lumps can resolve on their own, the presence of pain, changes in size, and signs of infection warrant a medical evaluation. It is always better to err on the side of caution, especially when it comes to changes in your body. If the lump continues to decrease in size and you are not experiencing any other concerning symptoms, you may monitor it for a short period. However, if you have any doubts or if the lump does not improve, please consult a healthcare provider for a thorough assessment and appropriate management.
In conclusion, while some lumps may resolve without intervention, the combination of pain and changes in size should prompt you to seek medical advice. Early evaluation can help rule out serious conditions and ensure that you receive the appropriate treatment.
