Frenulum injury?
Hello doctor, today I visited a urology clinic due to a tear in the frenulum (approximately 0.2 cm).
The clinic physician advised applying Betadine for wound care and mentioned that it would heal gradually.
They also inquired if sutures were necessary, but the doctor indicated that they were not needed.
However, after half a day, there is still some bleeding, so I would like to ask for your opinion.
Thank you.

If there is further bleeding, please return for treatment.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Managing frenulum tears, particularly in the context of a tear in the penile frenulum, can be a concerning issue, but with proper care, recovery is typically straightforward. Here are some insights and recommendations based on your situation.
Understanding Frenulum Tears
The frenulum is a sensitive band of tissue that connects the underside of the penis to the glans (the head). Tears can occur due to various reasons, including friction during sexual activity, aggressive masturbation, or even during medical examinations. A tear of about 0.2 cm, as you described, is relatively minor, but it can still cause discomfort and bleeding.
Initial Treatment
1. Cleaning the Area: It's crucial to keep the area clean to prevent infection. After any activity that may irritate the area, gently clean it with mild soap and water. Avoid using harsh soaps or chemicals that could cause further irritation.
2. Antiseptic Application: Your doctor recommended applying a topical antiseptic like Betadine (povidone-iodine). This is a good choice as it helps to disinfect the area and reduce the risk of infection. Make sure to apply it gently and avoid excessive rubbing.
3. Avoiding Irritation: It’s essential to avoid any activities that could further irritate the tear. This includes sexual activity, vigorous exercise, or anything that may cause friction in the area until it has healed.
Monitoring for Complications
- Bleeding: If you notice persistent bleeding, it’s essential to monitor the amount. A small amount of spotting can be normal, but if the bleeding is significant or does not stop, you should seek medical attention.
- Signs of Infection: Watch for signs of infection, which can include increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge that is yellow or green. If you experience any of these symptoms, consult your healthcare provider.
Recovery Time
Frenulum tears typically heal within a few days to a week, depending on the severity and care taken. Since your tear is minor, you may expect it to heal relatively quickly. However, if you continue to experience discomfort or if the bleeding persists, it would be wise to follow up with your healthcare provider.
Additional Care Tips
1. Pain Management: If you experience discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain. Always follow the recommended dosages.
2. Moisturizing: Keeping the area moisturized can promote healing. Consider using a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer or a healing ointment that is safe for sensitive areas.
3. Avoiding Tight Clothing: Wearing loose-fitting underwear can help reduce friction and irritation on the healing area.
4. Hydration and Nutrition: Maintaining good hydration and a balanced diet can support your body’s healing processes. Foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as zinc, can be particularly beneficial for skin healing.
When to Seek Further Help
If the tear does not show signs of improvement within a week, or if you have any concerns about the healing process, it’s important to return to your healthcare provider. They may reassess the injury and determine if further treatment, such as suturing or a different topical treatment, is necessary.
In summary, while a frenulum tear can be uncomfortable, with proper care and monitoring, it should heal effectively. Adhering to the advice of your healthcare provider and being mindful of your activities during the healing process will contribute significantly to a smooth recovery.
