Itching after tooth extraction?
Hello, doctor.
I have been browsing the dental forum but couldn't find a similar situation, so I would like to ask a question.
I had my wisdom tooth extracted on the afternoon of the 23rd, and today is the 31st.
I have been experiencing persistent itching.
The extraction was of my lower right wisdom tooth, and the wound itches.
Additionally, the inside of my lips is also very itchy to the point that I have formed wounds from rubbing it with my teeth.
I would like to know if this situation is normal.
I consulted the dentist who performed the procedure, but he couldn't provide an answer, only stating that itching is common.
However, it has been several days, and I am wondering if it could be an allergy or if there is an infection.
Although it hasn't affected my daily life, the level of itching is concerning, and I am worried about potential complications or sequelae.
I would appreciate your insights on this matter.
Thank you.

Dear Mr.
Chong-Wei,
Hello! If there is no swelling or pain after tooth extraction, it indicates that there is no infection.
Please communicate frequently with your physician.
Thank you! Wishing you safety!
Sincerely,

After tooth extraction, it is not uncommon to experience various sensations, including itching, discomfort, or pain at the extraction site. However, persistent itching for an extended period, such as the eight days you mentioned, can raise concerns that warrant further investigation.
Firstly, it is essential to understand that itching at the extraction site can be a part of the healing process. As the tissue begins to heal, nerve endings may become more sensitive, leading to sensations of itching or tingling. This is particularly true if the extraction involved a surgical procedure, such as the removal of a wisdom tooth, which can cause more trauma to the surrounding tissues compared to a simple extraction.
However, the fact that the itching has persisted for several days raises a few possibilities. One potential cause could be an allergic reaction. This could be due to medications prescribed post-extraction, such as antibiotics or pain relievers, or even materials used during the procedure, such as sutures or antiseptics. If you have a history of allergies, it would be wise to consider this possibility.
Another concern could be an infection. While infections typically present with more severe symptoms, such as increased pain, swelling, redness, or discharge from the extraction site, some infections can manifest with milder symptoms, including itching. If you notice any of these additional symptoms, it would be crucial to contact your dentist or oral surgeon promptly.
Additionally, the itching could be related to dry socket (alveolar osteitis), a condition that can occur after tooth extraction when the blood clot at the extraction site becomes dislodged or dissolves before the wound has healed. This condition can lead to significant pain and discomfort, but it can also cause unusual sensations, including itching. However, dry socket typically presents with more pronounced pain rather than just itching.
It is also worth noting that if you are inadvertently causing irritation by scratching the area with your teeth, this could lead to further inflammation and prolong the itching sensation. Maintaining good oral hygiene and avoiding any trauma to the area is essential during the healing process.
Given your concerns and the duration of the itching, it would be advisable to follow up with your dentist or an oral surgeon. They can conduct a thorough examination of the extraction site to rule out any complications, such as infection or allergic reactions, and provide appropriate treatment if necessary. They may also recommend topical treatments to alleviate the itching sensation.
In summary, while some itching after tooth extraction can be normal, persistent itching for over a week should be evaluated by a dental professional to ensure there are no underlying issues that need to be addressed. Your health and comfort are paramount, and seeking further advice is always a prudent choice when you have concerns about your recovery.
