It hurts when I touch my newly placed dentures?

Hello, I had an apicoectomy on my upper right premolar a few months ago, and recently I got a dental prosthesis.
Two weeks ago, I had the implant placed, and this week the prosthesis was cemented.
However, it has been two days since the prosthesis was attached, and I feel significant pain when I touch it.
I tried biting into some noodles, and it felt okay at the moment, but afterward, I experienced a slight lingering pain.
Is this normal? Should I avoid biting down on anything or touching it for now? Do I need to schedule a follow-up appointment, or should I just monitor the situation? Thank you.

Experiencing pain after getting dentures can be a common occurrence, especially in the initial stages following the placement of the prosthetic. Your situation, where you recently had a root-end resection and then received dentures, adds complexity to your healing process.
When you first get dentures, it is not unusual to experience discomfort or pain for several reasons. First, the gums and underlying bone may still be healing from the surgical procedure you underwent. The placement of dentures can exert pressure on these sensitive areas, leading to pain. Additionally, the adjustment period for new dentures can cause soreness as your mouth adapts to the new appliance.
In your case, since you mentioned that you feel significant pain when touching the denture, it could indicate that the denture is not fitting properly. A poor fit can lead to pressure points on the gums, causing irritation and pain. It is essential to have your dentist evaluate the fit of your dentures. They may need to make adjustments to relieve any pressure points that are causing discomfort.

You also noted that while biting into soft food like noodles was manageable at the moment, you experienced lingering pain afterward. This could suggest that while the denture may not be causing immediate pain during the act of biting, the overall pressure and movement involved can still lead to discomfort post-meal. It is advisable to avoid hard or chewy foods until you can confirm that your dentures fit properly and your gums have healed adequately.

As for whether you should avoid biting or touching the denture, it may be wise to limit these actions until you have consulted with your dentist. Continuing to apply pressure to a painful area could exacerbate the issue and prolong your discomfort.
In terms of follow-up, if the pain persists beyond a few days or worsens, it is crucial to return to your dentist for an evaluation. They can assess whether the pain is due to the denture fit, ongoing healing from your previous surgery, or another underlying issue.
In summary, while some discomfort after getting dentures can be normal, significant pain, especially when touching or using the denture, should be addressed by a dental professional. Proper fitting and adjustments are key to ensuring a comfortable experience with your new dentures. Always prioritize communication with your dentist regarding any concerns you have during your recovery process.
