Vaginal discharge color
In the two to three days before my menstrual period, the discharge is yellow, and the amount is neither too much nor too little (which is not how it used to be).
During my menstrual period, there are no abnormalities (perhaps the color is masked by menstrual blood).
After my period ends, the discharge returns to yellow, with no unusual odor, pain, or itching.
The discharge is mostly yellow and dry.
Could this be due to my recent low water intake (less than 500cc a day), which might be causing the darker color? I would appreciate it if you could take the time to answer, thank you.

Understanding yellow discharge before your period can be a common concern for many individuals. It’s important to recognize that changes in vaginal discharge can occur due to various factors, including hormonal fluctuations, hydration levels, and overall health.
Causes of Yellow Discharge
1. Hormonal Changes: The menstrual cycle is regulated by hormones, and as you approach your period, estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate. These hormonal changes can affect the consistency and color of vaginal discharge. It is not unusual for discharge to become yellowish in the days leading up to menstruation.
2. Cervical Mucus: The discharge you are experiencing may be cervical mucus, which can change in color and consistency throughout your cycle. Before your period, it may appear thicker and yellowish due to the hormonal shifts.
3. Hydration Levels: You mentioned that you have been drinking less water than usual. Dehydration can lead to concentrated urine, which may affect the color of your vaginal discharge. If you are not consuming enough fluids, it can lead to darker and more concentrated discharge.
4. Infections: While you noted that there is no unusual odor, pain, or itching, it’s still important to consider that some infections can cause changes in discharge color. Bacterial vaginosis or yeast infections can sometimes present with yellow discharge, but they are typically accompanied by other symptoms. If you notice any changes in odor, increased irritation, or discomfort, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider.
5. Normal Variation: It’s also possible that what you are experiencing is simply a normal variation of your discharge. Many women experience changes in discharge color and consistency throughout their menstrual cycle, and yellow discharge can be completely normal if it is not accompanied by other symptoms.
When to Seek Medical Advice
While occasional yellow discharge can be normal, it’s important to monitor your body for any changes. If you experience any of the following, it would be advisable to seek medical attention:
- A strong, unpleasant odor
- Itching or irritation in the vaginal area
- Changes in the consistency of the discharge (e.g., becoming clumpy or cottage cheese-like)
- Pain during intercourse or while urinating
- Any other unusual symptoms that concern you
Conclusion
In summary, yellow discharge before your period can be attributed to hormonal changes, cervical mucus variations, and even hydration levels. As long as there are no accompanying symptoms such as odor, pain, or irritation, it is likely a normal occurrence. However, staying hydrated is essential for overall health and can help maintain the normal color and consistency of your discharge. If you have any concerns or if symptoms change, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for further evaluation. Your health and comfort are paramount, and it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to changes in your body.
