Abnormal bleeding for six days after sexual intercourse?
Hello, doctor! I would like to ask about a situation that has occurred since my second sexual encounter six days ago.
After that, I noticed some light spotting, which seemed like a small amount of bleeding, but there was no significant pain.
The next day, I engaged in intimate activities for a longer duration; although there was no penetration, my fingers were involved.
Subsequently, I began to experience discomfort that gradually intensified, and I started noticing light bleeding and dark brown discharge that has continued until today, requiring the use of panty liners.
We used a condom during intercourse, and there were no breaks or leaks.
My last menstrual period was on January 18, with a normal cycle of 28 days, but I took emergency contraception last time, which caused my period to arrive a day earlier than expected.
Recently, I have been going to bed around 2 AM, which may mean my body isn't getting enough rest.
After researching, I suspect it could be a vaginal abrasion or a rupture of the inner lining, but I'm unsure if the bleeding and dark brown discharge will persist for so many days.
I would appreciate your insights on this matter.
Thank you!
Pei Pei, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/02/11

Abnormal bleeding after sexual activity can be concerning, and it’s important to understand the potential causes and implications. Based on your description, there are several factors to consider regarding the bleeding and discomfort you are experiencing.
Firstly, it’s essential to recognize that light bleeding or spotting after sexual activity can occur for various reasons. In many cases, this can be attributed to minor trauma or irritation of the vaginal walls, especially if there was vigorous activity or if lubrication was insufficient. Even though you mentioned using a condom and that there was no breakage, the friction from penetration or even from manual stimulation can lead to small tears or abrasions in the vaginal lining, resulting in bleeding. This is particularly true if the vaginal tissue is sensitive or if there is any underlying condition that makes it more susceptible to injury.
Another possibility is that the bleeding could be related to hormonal fluctuations. You mentioned that you took emergency contraception recently, which can cause changes in your menstrual cycle. Emergency contraceptive pills can lead to irregular bleeding or spotting as they alter hormone levels in the body. Since your last menstrual period was earlier than expected due to the pill, it’s possible that your body is still adjusting, which could explain the abnormal bleeding and changes in discharge.
The deep brown discharge you are experiencing is often old blood, which can occur when blood takes longer to exit the body. This can happen after a minor injury or irritation, as the blood may not flow out immediately and instead gets oxidized, leading to a brownish color. If the bleeding is light and not accompanied by severe pain, it may not be a cause for immediate concern. However, if the pain intensifies or if the bleeding continues for more than a few days, it would be wise to seek medical attention.
Additionally, you mentioned that you have been experiencing irregular sleep patterns and possibly insufficient rest. Lack of sleep can affect your overall health and hormonal balance, potentially contributing to menstrual irregularities or increased sensitivity in your body. Stress and fatigue can also play a role in how your body responds to sexual activity.
In terms of duration, if the bleeding persists beyond a few days or if you experience significant pain, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They may recommend a pelvic examination to rule out any infections, cervical issues, or other underlying conditions that could be causing the bleeding. A Pap smear may also be suggested to check for any abnormalities in cervical cells, especially if you are sexually active.
In conclusion, while minor bleeding after sexual activity can be common and often harmless, it’s crucial to monitor your symptoms. If you notice any changes such as increased pain, prolonged bleeding, or any other concerning symptoms, please do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. Your health and well-being are paramount, and getting the right care is essential for peace of mind.
