Palpitations and dizziness issues?
Hello Doctor, last week I suddenly felt cold in the middle of the night (due to a cold front).
After waking up, I kept shivering and my heart was racing.
Additionally, there was an earthquake that day, which may have affected me both physically and mentally, leading to insomnia that night.
Since then, I have been able to feel my heartbeat, and when I relax while sitting, I feel a bit shaky.
The same happens when I lie down, making me wonder if there is another earthquake.
Now, it has been about a week, and at night I can feel my heartbeat intensifying (but it doesn't hurt), especially noticeable when trying to sleep.
Although I really want to sleep, I can only turn to the position where I feel the least movement.
Today at work, I started feeling dizzy in the morning (with pressure in the area near my ears, temples, and forehead).
I couldn't stand it, so I went to a nearby clinic.
The doctor measured my heart rate and said it was 72, which is normal.
I explained my situation to the doctor, who concluded that it might be due to poor blood circulation from the cold weather and prescribed some medication.
Additionally, for the past month, I have been experiencing sharp pains in my right shoulder, lower back, and legs, sometimes extending to my abdomen, all on the right side.
I'm not sure if this is related to poor sleeping posture.
However, the loud heartbeat (which the doctor referred to as palpitations) continues to disrupt my sleep quality every day.
I would like to ask the doctor which specialty I should see at a larger hospital for further examination.

Hello, if you are experiencing symptoms such as dizziness and palpitations, it is recommended to first consult a cardiologist to assess for any vascular abnormalities.
If there are no physiological issues, you may then seek assistance from a psychiatrist.
Please note that online consultations do not equate to in-person medical visits and cannot provide accurate diagnoses or treatment recommendations.

Experiencing palpitations and dizziness can be concerning, especially when accompanied by other symptoms such as cold sweats, tremors, and sleep disturbances. Based on your description, it seems that you have been dealing with a combination of physical and psychological stressors, which may be contributing to your symptoms.
Palpitations are often described as the sensation of a racing, pounding, or fluttering heart. They can be triggered by various factors, including anxiety, stress, caffeine intake, dehydration, or underlying medical conditions such as arrhythmias or thyroid disorders. Dizziness, on the other hand, can stem from multiple causes, including low blood pressure, dehydration, inner ear issues, or even anxiety.
Given that your symptoms began after a stressful event (the earthquake) and have persisted for about a week, it is possible that anxiety is playing a significant role in your experience. Stress can lead to heightened awareness of bodily sensations, making you more sensitive to your heartbeat and any physical discomfort. Additionally, the cold weather may have affected your circulation, leading to feelings of coldness and discomfort.
It is important to note that while occasional palpitations can be benign, persistent or worsening symptoms warrant further evaluation. You mentioned that your heart rate was measured at 72 beats per minute, which is within the normal range. However, if you continue to experience significant discomfort, dizziness, or if your symptoms worsen, it is advisable to seek further medical attention.
When considering which specialist to consult, a good starting point would be a primary care physician or a cardiologist. A primary care physician can perform an initial assessment, including a thorough history and physical examination, and may order basic tests such as an electrocardiogram (ECG) or blood tests to rule out any underlying conditions. If necessary, they can refer you to a cardiologist for more specialized evaluation, especially if there are concerns about your heart rhythm or other cardiac issues.
In addition to seeking medical advice, there are some self-care strategies you can implement to help manage your symptoms. These include:
1. Stress Management: Engage in relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga to help reduce anxiety and improve your overall sense of well-being.
2. Hydration: Ensure you are drinking enough fluids, as dehydration can contribute to dizziness and palpitations.
3. Sleep Hygiene: Establish a regular sleep routine and create a comfortable sleep environment to improve your sleep quality.
4. Physical Activity: Gentle exercise, such as walking or stretching, can improve circulation and help alleviate some discomfort.
5. Avoid Stimulants: Limit caffeine and nicotine intake, as these can exacerbate palpitations.
6. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a diary of your symptoms, noting when they occur, their duration, and any associated factors. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.
In conclusion, while your symptoms may be related to stress and anxiety, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional to rule out any serious underlying conditions. Early intervention can help address your concerns and improve your quality of life. If your symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to seek medical attention promptly.
