Upon waking up in the morning, I briefly saw black flashes and branches?
Hello doctor, I would like to ask about something I've been experiencing recently.
When I wake up in the morning and open my eyes, I often see black branches or flashes of light, but they usually disappear after 1-2 seconds when I open my eyes fully.
During the day, I don't notice this happening, but I do have a bit of floaters in my right eye, which appear as a small black dot that only shows up when I look at a white sky or screen.
Is there a connection between these symptoms?
Charles, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/02/13

Seeing black lightning or branches upon waking can be a concerning experience, especially when it occurs frequently. This phenomenon, often described as transient visual disturbances, can be attributed to several factors related to eye health and physiology.
Firstly, the experience of seeing black shapes or flashes of light, particularly upon waking, may be linked to a condition known as "photopsia." Photopsia refers to the perception of light that is not actually present, and it can manifest as flashes, spots, or shapes. This can occur due to various reasons, including changes in the vitreous humor (the gel-like substance inside the eye), retinal issues, or even neurological factors. Given that you mentioned having a small black dot in your vision, which you associate with floaters (or "myodesopsia"), it is possible that these symptoms are interconnected.
Floaters are typically harmless and are caused by tiny clumps of gel or cells within the vitreous that cast shadows on the retina. They are more noticeable against bright backgrounds, such as a clear sky or a white screen. However, if you are experiencing new or worsening floaters, or if you see flashes of light, it is crucial to consult an eye care professional. These symptoms can sometimes indicate more serious conditions, such as retinal tears or detachments, which require immediate attention.
The transient nature of the black branches or lightning you see upon waking could also be related to the way your eyes adjust to changes in light. When you wake up, your eyes transition from a dark environment (like your closed eyelids) to a brighter one. This sudden change can cause temporary visual disturbances as your eyes adjust. This phenomenon is generally harmless and resolves quickly, as you noted it disappears within a couple of seconds.
Additionally, if you have been experiencing eye strain or fatigue, especially if you spend long hours in front of screens, this can exacerbate visual disturbances. Prolonged screen time can lead to digital eye strain, which may cause symptoms such as blurred vision, dry eyes, and even transient visual disturbances. Ensuring that you take regular breaks, use proper lighting, and maintain a comfortable distance from screens can help alleviate these symptoms.
In summary, while the experiences you describe may be related to benign conditions such as floaters or light adaptation, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you notice any changes in your vision, such as an increase in the number of floaters, persistent flashes of light, or any other unusual visual phenomena, it is advisable to seek a comprehensive eye examination. An eye care professional can perform the necessary tests to rule out any serious underlying conditions and provide you with peace of mind regarding your eye health. Regular eye check-ups are crucial, especially if you have pre-existing conditions like myopia (nearsightedness) or if you notice any new symptoms.
