Seeing things strangely for a short period of time?
While driving, I noticed that when my vehicle was stopped, a portion of the asphalt road in front of me appeared to be slowly converging towards a point, resembling ripples.
However, the distant road, the scenery on the sides, the interior of the car, and my phone did not exhibit this phenomenon.
After having lunch and driving again, this situation did not occur.
The weather was nice today with bright sunlight, and I have a slight sensitivity to light, but my ophthalmologist has confirmed that there are no issues with my eyes; the internal examination of my eyeball was normal.
I would like to ask the doctor what might be causing the above situation.

Dr. Cai Wenyuan reply Ophthalmology
Hello, the ophthalmologist stated that there is no issue with the eyes.
The examination of the interior of the eyeball using instruments showed normal results; however, without a specific context, it is difficult to explain.
Wishing you peace and good health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Seeing distorted images while driving can be a concerning experience, and it’s important to understand the potential causes and implications of such visual disturbances. Based on your description, it seems that you experienced a phenomenon where the asphalt appeared to ripple or concentrate towards a point, which is often referred to as a "visual distortion." This can occur under certain conditions and may not necessarily indicate a serious eye problem, especially since your eye examination showed normal results.
One common explanation for this type of visual distortion is related to atmospheric conditions, particularly heat. When driving on a hot day, the heat rising from the asphalt can create a layer of warm air above the road surface. This phenomenon, known as "heat shimmer" or "heat waves," can cause light to bend as it passes through different temperatures of air, leading to the appearance of rippling or distorted images. This effect is more pronounced when looking at objects close to the ground, such as the asphalt, compared to distant objects, which is consistent with your experience.
Additionally, your mention of light sensitivity (photophobia) could also play a role in your visual perception. When the sun is bright, it can cause glare, which may exacerbate any existing visual disturbances. If you are sensitive to light, it might be worthwhile to consider wearing polarized sunglasses while driving to reduce glare and improve visual clarity.
Another factor to consider is your overall visual health. Even though your recent eye examination was normal, conditions such as dry eyes, fatigue, or even temporary visual disturbances can occur, especially after prolonged periods of focus or exposure to bright light. If you had just eaten, it’s possible that your body was in a state of digestion, which can sometimes lead to temporary changes in visual perception due to blood flow changes or fatigue.
If this distortion occurs frequently or is accompanied by other symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, or changes in your vision, it would be advisable to consult with an eye care professional for further evaluation. They may recommend additional tests to rule out any underlying conditions that could be contributing to your visual disturbances.
In summary, the distorted images you experienced while driving could be attributed to environmental factors such as heat shimmer, light sensitivity, or temporary visual fatigue. Since your eye examination returned normal results, it is likely that this is a benign phenomenon. However, if you continue to experience these distortions or if they worsen, seeking further evaluation from an eye care specialist would be prudent to ensure your visual health and safety while driving.
