Persistent Yellow Nasal Discharge: Is It a Cold or Something More? - Otolaryngology

There is a continuous flow of yellow nasal discharge from the lower part of the right nostril?

Doctor, when I lower my head, I keep having yellow, watery nasal discharge.
I visited an ENT specialist yesterday, and the doctor was initially concerned that it might be cerebrospinal fluid leakage, so they tested the nasal discharge (which showed no glucose) to rule that out.
Then, they prescribed me denosine and broen-c, but after taking them for a day, I still have yellow nasal discharge when I lower my head, with no improvement.
I would like to ask if this is really just a cold? Because I’ve started to feel a bit of swelling in my right cheek, and I’m a bit worried.

Persistent yellow nasal discharge can be concerning, especially when accompanied by facial swelling. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing a significant amount of yellow nasal discharge, particularly when bending your head down, and you have noted some facial swelling on the right side.
The yellow color of nasal discharge often indicates the presence of an infection, which could be viral or bacterial in nature. In many cases, yellow or green nasal discharge is associated with sinusitis (sinus infection), especially if it persists for more than a week or is accompanied by other symptoms such as facial pain, pressure, or swelling. The fact that your doctor initially considered the possibility of cerebrospinal fluid leakage suggests that they were thorough in ruling out serious conditions, which is reassuring.

The medications you were prescribed, denosin and broen-c, are typically used to help reduce nasal congestion and improve drainage. However, if you are still experiencing persistent yellow nasal discharge and facial swelling after taking these medications for a day, it may indicate that the underlying issue has not been adequately addressed.
Facial swelling, particularly if localized to one side, can be a sign of sinusitis, especially if there is associated pain or pressure in the affected sinus area. In your case, the swelling of the right cheek could suggest that the right maxillary sinus is involved. This could be due to inflammation or infection, which may require further evaluation and possibly different treatment.

It is important to monitor your symptoms closely. If the yellow nasal discharge continues, or if you develop additional symptoms such as fever, increased facial pain, or worsening swelling, it would be advisable to return to your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They may consider imaging studies, such as a CT scan of the sinuses, to assess for any blockage or infection that may not be responding to initial treatment.

In the meantime, there are some supportive measures you can take to help alleviate your symptoms. Staying well-hydrated can help thin mucus and promote drainage. Using a saline nasal spray or rinse can also help keep your nasal passages moist and clear out any irritants. Additionally, applying warm compresses to the affected area may provide some relief from facial discomfort.

In summary, while your symptoms may initially suggest a common cold, the persistence of yellow nasal discharge and the development of facial swelling warrant further investigation. It is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider to ensure that you receive the appropriate treatment and to rule out any more serious conditions. Your health and well-being are paramount, so do not hesitate to seek further medical advice if your symptoms do not improve.
