Hello Doctor, my bowel movements have been normal in the past.
However, the day before yesterday and yesterday after eating chocolate cookies, the color of my stool suddenly changed to a very dark brown.
After stopping the cookies, I had three bowel movements yesterday afternoon and evening, and then I didn't have any more.
Today at noon, after eating a rib rice dish, the color of my stool changed to a tarry consistency with a bit of sheen.
Could you please tell me what might be happening? Is this a sign of colon cancer, or could it be due to something I ate or an upset stomach? How long will it take for my bowel movements to return to normal, and do I need to see a doctor?

Hello: The manifestations of colorectal cancer are quite diverse; however, they typically involve a progressive worsening of symptoms.
If your symptoms are acute, there is no need to worry excessively.
It is advisable to choose foods that are low in fat.
After your symptoms improve, you can gradually reintroduce other foods.
If dietary changes do not lead to symptom improvement, it is recommended to consult a gastroenterologist.
Changhua Hospital cares about your health.

When it comes to changes in stool color, it is essential to understand that various factors can influence these changes, including diet, medications, and underlying health conditions. In your case, you mentioned a sudden change in stool color to a very dark brown after consuming chocolate cookies, followed by a change to a tarry appearance with a shiny texture after eating pork rice.
Firstly, the color of your stool can be significantly affected by what you eat. Foods that are dark in color, such as chocolate, can lead to darker stool. Similarly, certain foods, especially those high in fat or iron, can also alter the appearance of your stool. The tarry stool you described, which has a shiny appearance, is particularly noteworthy. Tarry stools can indicate the presence of digested blood, which can be a sign of bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract. This could be due to various reasons, including ulcers, gastritis, or other gastrointestinal issues.

Given that you experienced three episodes of diarrhea, it is possible that you may have had a mild gastrointestinal upset, possibly due to something you ate. Diarrhea can lead to changes in stool consistency and color, and it is not uncommon for stool to appear darker or different during such episodes. However, the presence of tarry stools is a symptom that should not be taken lightly.

Here are some important considerations regarding your situation:
1. Dietary Influence: As mentioned, certain foods can change stool color. If you have consumed foods that are dark or rich in iron, this could explain the change. However, if the stool remains dark and tarry, it is essential to investigate further.

2. Hydration and Recovery: After experiencing diarrhea, it is crucial to stay hydrated. Ensure you are drinking plenty of fluids, as dehydration can occur with diarrhea. Monitor your symptoms closely.

3. When to Seek Medical Attention: If you notice persistent changes in stool color, especially if it remains tarry or if you experience additional symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, or signs of dehydration (such as dizziness, dry mouth, or decreased urine output), you should seek medical attention promptly. Additionally, if you have any concerns about the possibility of serious conditions such as colorectal cancer, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation.

4. Duration of Symptoms: If your stool color does not return to normal within a few days after the resolution of diarrhea, or if you continue to experience changes in bowel habits, it is essential to see a doctor. They may recommend tests such as stool analysis, blood tests, or imaging studies to determine the underlying cause.

In summary, while dietary factors may explain some of the changes you are experiencing, the presence of tarry stools is concerning and warrants further investigation. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to changes in bowel habits and stool appearance. If you have any doubts or if symptoms persist, please consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation and appropriate management.
