Bowel movements after polyp removal?

Hello, doctor.
Last Friday, I underwent a colonoscopy at Taoyuan Hospital to remove polyps.
Since then, I have been experiencing continuous bowel sounds, and my stools have mostly been mushy or thin.
On the first day after the procedure, I noticed a small amount of blood in my stool, but it hasn't occurred since.
For the first three nights, my diet consisted of congee, broccoli, and apples, while I ate normally during the day, avoiding greasy foods.
The bowel sounds have persisted longer than before the polyp removal.
Is it possible that the polyps were not completely removed? Shouldn't my stools be more banana-shaped?

Aling, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/03/06

It is recommended to follow a mild diet, low in oil and dairy.
Additionally, please consult your original treating physician to review the report.

After undergoing a polypectomy, it is common to experience changes in bowel movements, and it's important to understand what to expect during the recovery period. The symptoms you are describing, such as increased bowel sounds (borborygmi), and changes in the consistency of your stool, are not unusual following this type of procedure.
Firstly, the presence of mucus-like or "muddy" stools can be attributed to several factors. After a polypectomy, your bowel may be temporarily sensitive or reactive due to the manipulation during the procedure. This can lead to changes in how your intestines process food and waste. The fact that you experienced a small amount of blood on the first day after the procedure is also not uncommon, especially if the polypectomy involved removing larger polyps or if there was any irritation to the bowel lining. However, if the bleeding persists or worsens, it is crucial to contact your healthcare provider.

Regarding your diet, it is wise to avoid heavy, greasy foods immediately after the procedure, as these can exacerbate gastrointestinal discomfort. Your choice of a light diet consisting of rice porridge, broccoli, and apples is appropriate for recovery. These foods are generally easy to digest and can help minimize irritation in your gastrointestinal tract.
The consistency of your stool can vary widely after a polypectomy. It is not unusual for stools to be thinner or more irregular for a period of time. The ideal stool consistency, often described as "banana-shaped," may take some time to return to normal as your bowel heals and adjusts. It is essential to stay hydrated and maintain a balanced diet rich in fiber to support healthy bowel function. Gradually reintroducing a variety of foods can help your digestive system adapt and may improve stool consistency over time.

If you continue to experience significant changes in bowel habits, such as persistent diarrhea, ongoing abdominal pain, or if you notice any new symptoms, it is advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may want to perform additional evaluations to ensure that there are no complications from the procedure, such as incomplete removal of polyps or other underlying issues.

In summary, while changes in bowel movements after a polypectomy can be concerning, they are often part of the normal healing process. Monitoring your symptoms, maintaining a healthy diet, and staying in communication with your healthcare provider will help ensure a smooth recovery. If you have any doubts or if symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Your health and peace of mind are paramount during this recovery phase.
