Discontinuation of oral contraceptives?
Hello doctor, I would like to ask about my situation.
I have been taking the oral contraceptive pill (Diane) for almost two years.
After finishing my last pill on February 22, my menstrual period started on February 27.
Due to experiencing dizziness, I consulted a gynecologist who advised me to stop taking the contraceptive pill for two months, so I haven't taken it since.
My last menstrual period was from February 27 to March 3, but today, March 13, I noticed what seems to be the onset of my period, although the flow is very light.
Is this normal?

This may be ovulatory bleeding, which occurs occasionally in about 10% of women and is considered normal.
If you have any concerns, please visit a gynecologist.

More Info
When a woman stops taking birth control pills, it is common to experience irregular periods as her body readjusts to its natural hormonal cycle. Birth control pills, such as the one you mentioned (Diane), work by regulating hormones to prevent ovulation and manage menstrual cycles. When you stop taking them, your body may take some time to return to its pre-pill hormonal balance, which can lead to variations in menstrual flow, cycle length, and symptoms.
In your case, you stopped taking the pill after completing your last pack on February 22, and your period started on February 27, which is a typical response as the withdrawal bleed occurs after stopping the hormone intake. However, since you mentioned that you experienced dizziness and were advised by your doctor to refrain from taking the pill for two months, it is essential to consider that your body is still adjusting.
The light bleeding you observed on March 13 could be a sign of your body transitioning back to its natural cycle. This could be classified as spotting or an early period, which is not uncommon after stopping hormonal contraceptives. Many women experience lighter periods or spotting during the first few months after discontinuing birth control. It is also possible that your menstrual cycle may take a few months to stabilize, and you might experience variations in flow and timing during this period.
It is crucial to monitor your symptoms and menstrual patterns over the next few months. If you continue to experience irregular bleeding, significant changes in your cycle, or any concerning symptoms such as severe pain or heavy bleeding, it would be advisable to consult your healthcare provider. They can evaluate your situation further and determine if any underlying issues need to be addressed.
In addition, it is worth noting that after stopping birth control pills, some women may also experience symptoms related to hormonal fluctuations, such as mood swings, acne, or changes in libido. These symptoms typically resolve as your body readjusts.
If you have any specific concerns about your menstrual health or if you are considering other forms of contraception, discussing these with your healthcare provider can provide you with tailored advice and options that suit your needs. Remember that every woman's body responds differently to hormonal changes, and patience is key as your cycle normalizes.
