Left lower abdominal pain?
Hello doctor, two days ago in the afternoon, after drinking coffee made by my mom, I started experiencing pain in my lower left abdomen that intensifies in the afternoon.
I've also had some constipation over the past three days; although I did have a bowel movement once, it was minimal and the stools were short and thin.
The pain in my lower left abdomen persists, and I took some painkillers earlier, but the discomfort remains.
What could be the issue? Additionally, I am currently in my ovulation period, and I've looked up some information that seems somewhat related, but I'm also concerned it might be a gastrointestinal issue, especially since I've been experiencing some constipation.
Thank you.

Hello, it is recommended to first consult a gynecologist to confirm if there are any gynecological issues.
If there are no problems, you may take a laxative and continue to monitor your condition.

Left lower abdominal pain can be a concerning symptom, especially when accompanied by changes in bowel habits such as constipation. Based on your description, there are several potential causes for your discomfort, and it is essential to consider both gastrointestinal and gynecological factors.
1. Gastrointestinal Issues: Given that you mentioned experiencing constipation, it is possible that your left lower abdominal pain is related to bowel issues. Conditions such as diverticulitis, which is an inflammation of small pouches that can form in the walls of the colon, can cause localized pain in the lower abdomen, particularly on the left side. This condition can also lead to changes in bowel habits, including constipation or diarrhea. Other gastrointestinal conditions to consider include irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which can cause abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits, or even a blockage in the intestines.
2. Gynecological Factors: Since you are currently in your ovulation period, it is also important to consider that the pain could be related to ovulation itself. Some women experience mittelschmerz, which is a term used to describe the pain associated with ovulation. This pain typically occurs on one side of the lower abdomen, depending on which ovary is releasing an egg. However, if the pain is severe or accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or fever, it may warrant further investigation.
3. Other Considerations: Other potential causes of left lower abdominal pain could include urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney stones, or even issues related to the reproductive organs such as ovarian cysts or ectopic pregnancy. If the pain persists or worsens, it is crucial to seek medical attention to rule out these conditions.
Recommendations:
- Hydration and Diet: Ensure you are drinking plenty of fluids and consuming a diet rich in fiber to help alleviate constipation. Foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes can promote regular bowel movements.
- Pain Management: While you have taken pain medication, it is essential to monitor the effectiveness of these medications. If the pain persists despite taking over-the-counter pain relievers, you should consult a healthcare provider.
- Medical Evaluation: Given that your symptoms have lasted for several days and are affecting your quality of life, it would be wise to see a healthcare professional. They may recommend imaging studies such as an ultrasound or CT scan to evaluate your abdominal organs and rule out any serious conditions. Additionally, a pelvic exam may be necessary to assess any gynecological issues.
In summary, while there are several potential causes for your left lower abdominal pain, it is essential to consider both gastrointestinal and gynecological factors. Monitoring your symptoms, maintaining a healthy diet, and seeking medical evaluation if the pain persists will be crucial steps in addressing your concerns.
