Swelling around the umbilical hernia incision?

Hello Doctor: I had umbilical hernia surgery on March 9.
Initially, the incision site (located inside the belly button, slightly to the left) was covered with a cosmetic adhesive.
However, a week post-surgery, I noticed a lump (slightly raised and hard) in the upper left area around the belly button, near the incision.
Is this a recurrence of the hernia, or is it related to swelling from the incision?

Without a personal examination, I cannot provide you with a definitive answer.
However, this situation is generally related to the inner sutures.
A small number of individuals may experience swelling due to a hematoma or wound infection.
To determine the exact cause, it is essential to have a physician conduct an examination.

After undergoing umbilical hernia surgery, it is not uncommon to experience some swelling or hardness around the surgical site. The swelling you are describing, particularly in the area near the incision, can be attributed to several factors, including normal post-operative inflammation, fluid accumulation, or even the formation of scar tissue.
When surgery is performed, the body initiates a healing response, which often includes inflammation. This process can lead to swelling as blood flow increases to the area to deliver necessary nutrients and immune cells to promote healing. The presence of a hard, slightly raised area around the incision site could indicate that your body is still in the process of healing. This is typically a normal part of recovery and may resolve over time as the tissues heal.

However, it is also important to consider the possibility of complications such as seroma or hematoma formation. A seroma is a collection of fluid that can accumulate in the surgical area, while a hematoma is a collection of blood outside of blood vessels. Both conditions can cause swelling and discomfort. If the swelling is accompanied by increased pain, redness, warmth, or discharge from the incision site, these could be signs of infection or other complications, and you should seek medical attention promptly.

Regarding your concern about a potential hernia recurrence, it is essential to differentiate between normal post-operative swelling and the signs of a recurrent hernia. A recurrent hernia may present as a bulge that is more pronounced when standing or straining and may be associated with pain or discomfort. If the swelling you are experiencing does not decrease over time or if you notice a distinct bulge that feels different from the surrounding tissue, it would be prudent to consult your surgeon for a thorough evaluation.

In terms of recovery, it is crucial to follow your surgeon's post-operative care instructions, which may include activity restrictions, wound care, and follow-up appointments. If you have any concerns about your recovery or the appearance of the surgical site, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider. They can provide you with the best guidance based on your specific situation.

In summary, while swelling around the umbilical hernia surgery site can be a normal part of the healing process, it is essential to monitor the area for any signs of complications. If you are unsure or if the swelling persists or worsens, seeking medical advice is the best course of action to ensure a smooth recovery.
