Drug side effects
Hello, pharmacist: I have been taking Bisoprolol hemifumarate 5 mg, half a tablet daily, for about four months due to unstable blood pressure.
During this time, I have experienced discomfort in my throat with mild inflammation, which has persisted for over three months.
Recently, I have also noticed swelling in my upper lip, and I experience shortness of breath when I speak with slight agitation or emotional distress.
This phenomenon started about three months ago; I did not have this issue before.
Could these two symptoms be side effects of Bisoprolol? Thank you very much!

Bisoprolol is a beta-blocker commonly prescribed for managing hypertension and certain heart conditions. While it is generally well-tolerated, it can have side effects, some of which may be concerning, as you've described.
The symptoms you are experiencing, such as throat irritation, swelling of the lips, and shortness of breath during emotional situations, could potentially be linked to your use of Bisoprolol. Although these specific symptoms are not the most common side effects associated with Bisoprolol, they may indicate an allergic reaction or sensitivity to the medication. Allergic reactions can manifest in various ways, including swelling (angioedema), which can affect the lips and throat, leading to discomfort and difficulty breathing.
It's important to note that beta-blockers like Bisoprolol can sometimes cause respiratory issues, particularly in individuals with a history of asthma or other respiratory conditions. The feeling of breathlessness or "air hunger" you experience during emotional stress could also be related to anxiety or panic attacks, which can occur in conjunction with medication side effects.
In your case, the throat discomfort and swelling are particularly concerning. These symptoms could indicate a more serious reaction, such as angioedema, which can be life-threatening if it leads to airway obstruction. Therefore, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. Your healthcare provider may recommend discontinuing Bisoprolol and exploring alternative medications for managing your blood pressure that may not cause these side effects.
In addition to the above, it's essential to consider other factors that could contribute to your symptoms. For instance, if you have recently started any new medications or supplements, they could interact with Bisoprolol or cause similar side effects. Additionally, lifestyle factors such as stress, diet, and hydration can also impact how you feel physically and emotionally.
If you are experiencing persistent symptoms, it is advisable to have a thorough evaluation by your healthcare provider. They may perform tests to rule out other potential causes of your symptoms, such as allergies, anxiety disorders, or other underlying health issues.
In summary, while Bisoprolol is effective for managing blood pressure, it can cause side effects, including those you are experiencing. It is essential to communicate these symptoms to your healthcare provider, who can assess your situation and determine the best course of action. Your health and safety should always be the priority, and any concerning symptoms should be addressed promptly to ensure appropriate management and care.
