Is it possible for hemorrhoids to heal on their own?
I apologize for the inconvenience, but I would like to ask the doctor about my condition.
Two years ago, I accidentally developed hemorrhoids.
Initially, I consulted a doctor who prescribed medication and suppositories.
After that, I focused on maintaining regular bowel movements and eating more fruits.
I also consulted a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner.
Recently (this year), it seems that my hemorrhoids have improved, but I'm still not entirely sure.
Previously, I felt a foreign body sensation in my rectum, which is now gone.
However, my bowel movements are a bit thicker, and I still experience pain and slight bleeding after a bowel movement, although it resolves by the next day.
Is it possible for hemorrhoids to heal on their own? Or could this be related to mild hemorrhoids?

Dr. Ke Fangxu reply Surgery
Hemorrhoids only require medical attention when there is severe pain and bleeding.
Based on your current condition, there is no need for special treatment as long as the symptoms do not recur.
Hemorrhoids are normal tissues in the body that help maintain the closure of gas and fluids.
As long as there are no specific symptoms, there is no need to intervene unnecessarily.

Hemorrhoids, commonly known as piles, are swollen veins in the lower rectum and anus that can cause discomfort, pain, and bleeding during bowel movements. They can be classified into two main types: internal hemorrhoids, which occur inside the rectum, and external hemorrhoids, which develop under the skin around the anus. Many individuals experience hemorrhoids at some point in their lives, and the severity of symptoms can vary widely.
To address your question, yes, hemorrhoids can heal on their own, especially if they are mild or moderate. The body has a remarkable ability to recover from various conditions, including hemorrhoids, particularly when lifestyle changes are implemented. Here are some key points to consider regarding the self-recovery of hemorrhoids:
1. Lifestyle Modifications: One of the most effective ways to manage and potentially heal hemorrhoids is through dietary and lifestyle changes. Increasing fiber intake by consuming more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help soften stools and reduce straining during bowel movements, which is a common trigger for hemorrhoids. Staying well-hydrated is also crucial, as it aids in digestion and helps prevent constipation.
2. Regular Bowel Habits: Establishing a regular bowel routine can help minimize the risk of developing hemorrhoids. This includes responding promptly to the urge to have a bowel movement and avoiding prolonged sitting on the toilet, which can increase pressure on the veins in the rectal area.
3. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter creams and ointments can provide relief from symptoms such as itching and pain. These treatments often contain ingredients like hydrocortisone or witch hazel, which can reduce inflammation and discomfort.
4. Warm Baths: Soaking in a warm bath can help alleviate pain and discomfort associated with hemorrhoids. This practice, known as sitz bathing, can promote blood flow to the area and aid in healing.
5. Monitoring Symptoms: It’s essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you notice that the bleeding persists, increases, or is accompanied by severe pain, it is crucial to seek medical attention. While mild hemorrhoids can resolve on their own, more severe cases may require medical intervention.
6. Consulting a Healthcare Provider: If your symptoms improve, as you mentioned, and you are experiencing less discomfort and no longer feel an "alien" sensation, it is a positive sign. However, if you continue to experience pain or bleeding, even if it is minor, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They can assess the severity of your condition and recommend appropriate treatments, which may include prescription medications or procedures for more severe hemorrhoids.
7. Understanding the Healing Process: Healing from hemorrhoids can take time, and it is not uncommon for symptoms to fluctuate. Some individuals may experience periods of improvement followed by flare-ups. This can be particularly true if dietary habits or bowel routines are inconsistent.
In summary, while mild hemorrhoids can often heal on their own with appropriate self-care measures, it is essential to remain vigilant about your symptoms. If you notice any concerning changes or if your symptoms do not improve, seeking medical advice is the best course of action. Remember, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and being proactive about your digestive health can significantly contribute to the prevention and management of hemorrhoids.
