Is the hymen still intact?
Hello Doctor, I would like to ask about something.
During my last menstrual period (two weeks ago), I noticed a thin membrane at the vaginal opening, but today I don't see any trace of that membrane; it feels dry.
However, I have a lot of white discharge, and there is a white, chunky discharge at the vaginal opening, but I don't feel any pain.
There are no blood stains on my underwear (perhaps because I am wearing black underwear, so it's hard to see).
I have not had sexual intercourse, but I have a habit of keeping the blanket between my legs while sleeping, and I also scratch when I feel itchy in the genital area.
Occasionally, I touch the external genitalia, but I do not insert anything.
So, is my hymen still intact? Could my actions have been too rough and caused a tear? Why did I see it last time but not today? Thank you.

Hello, based on your description, that thin layer could possibly be due to secretions or other reasons.
If you need further confirmation, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist for examination and assessment.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

Understanding the integrity of the hymen and the changes in vaginal health can be a source of concern for many individuals. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing some normal variations in vaginal discharge and sensation, which can be influenced by several factors, including hormonal changes, physical activity, and personal habits.
Firstly, the hymen is a thin membrane that partially covers the vaginal opening. It is important to note that the presence or absence of a hymen does not determine a person's sexual history or worth. The hymen can stretch or tear due to various activities, including physical exercise, tampon use, or sexual intercourse. However, it can also remain intact despite these activities, as the hymen can be quite elastic.
You mentioned observing a thin membrane at the vaginal opening during your last menstrual period, but not seeing it now. This could be due to several reasons. The hymen can change in appearance over time, especially with hormonal fluctuations during your menstrual cycle. The menstrual cycle can cause changes in vaginal discharge, which may affect how the hymen appears. Additionally, the presence of white discharge is common and can be a normal part of your menstrual cycle, especially if it is not accompanied by any unusual symptoms such as itching, burning, or a strong odor.
Regarding the white, chunky discharge you observed, it is essential to consider the characteristics of the discharge. If it is thick and resembles cottage cheese, it could indicate a yeast infection, especially if accompanied by itching or irritation. However, if it is just a normal discharge without any discomfort, it may simply be a result of hormonal changes or natural vaginal flora.
Your habits of sleeping with a blanket between your legs or scratching the area may not necessarily cause damage to the hymen, but they can lead to irritation or discomfort in the vaginal area. It is crucial to maintain good hygiene and avoid excessive scratching, as this can lead to infections or irritation.
If you are concerned about the integrity of your hymen or any changes in your vaginal health, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional. They can perform a physical examination and provide you with personalized advice based on your specific situation. Additionally, if you experience any unusual symptoms such as persistent itching, burning, or abnormal discharge, seeking medical advice is essential to rule out any infections or other health concerns.
In summary, the changes you are experiencing may be normal and related to your menstrual cycle and hormonal fluctuations. The hymen's appearance can vary, and its integrity is not solely defined by the absence of sexual activity. If you have ongoing concerns or experience any discomfort, please reach out to a healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. Your health and well-being are paramount, and professional advice can help clarify any uncertainties you may have.
