Complications of double eyelid surgery?
Hello Doctor, I underwent double eyelid surgery at a well-known chain aesthetic clinic last August.
I was dissatisfied with the results and had the stitches removed in November.
After the surgery, I encountered two issues:
1.
Since the surgery, my eyes have become very easily fatigued.
I work on a computer frequently and used to have no problem working for eight hours straight, but now I feel strain after just two to three hours.
I later developed dry eye syndrome, and I have been using artificial tears and taking Cyclosporine (Restasis) to promote peripheral blood circulation, which has slightly alleviated the symptoms.
Is this a complication from the double eyelid surgery? Will it improve over time? I am concerned that the sutures may have affected the eye's accommodative muscles or the optic nerve.
2.
The most troubling issue is with my right eye.
Initially, there was mild redness and swelling at the limbus accompanied by a stinging sensation.
In October, an ophthalmologist diagnosed it as fatigue-related.
After the stitches were removed, I gradually began to experience blurriness, but my vision remains normal; it feels like there is a layer of fog over my visual field, and this is only in my right eye! This has persisted for four months now, along with swelling and stinging of the eyeball.
I have consulted several hospitals, and they have only diagnosed dry eyes and mild signs of glaucoma, but none could explain why the symptoms are only present in my right eye.
I have considered several possibilities and would like to ask the doctor for clarification: Could it be an allergic reaction to the anesthesia? Why only the right eye? Did the mild symptoms worsen after the anesthesia during stitch removal, or is it possible that the right cornea is inflamed, damaged, or edematous? I previously wore contact lenses but have stopped due to my eye issues.
However, the doctors have not been able to determine if the anesthesia caused any optic nerve damage or if there are issues with the accommodative muscles.
Since I have seen several hospitals without a conclusion, I would like to know if you have encountered similar cases that could provide some insight.
At this stage, I really don’t know what further remedies I can pursue.
Would acupuncture in traditional Chinese medicine help improve my condition?

Post-surgery complications following double eyelid surgery can be quite concerning, especially when symptoms persist or worsen over time. In your case, you are experiencing significant discomfort, including eye fatigue, dryness, and specific issues with your right eye, which has led to visual disturbances. Let's break down your concerns and explore potential explanations and solutions.
1. Eye Fatigue and Dryness: It is not uncommon for patients to experience increased eye fatigue and dryness after eyelid surgery. The surgery can alter the eyelid's ability to close completely, which may lead to exposure of the cornea and subsequent dryness. Additionally, if you are working long hours on a computer, this can exacerbate symptoms of digital eye strain, leading to discomfort after shorter periods of use than you were previously accustomed to. The use of artificial tears and medications like cyclosporine (Restasis) can help manage dry eye symptoms, but it is essential to monitor your condition closely. Over time, many patients find that their symptoms improve as they adapt to the changes in their eyelids, but this is not guaranteed.
2. Right Eye Symptoms: The specific symptoms you are experiencing in your right eye—redness, swelling, and a foggy visual field—are concerning and warrant further investigation. The fact that these symptoms have persisted for several months suggests that they may not be solely related to fatigue or dryness. Possible causes could include:
- Corneal Issues: If there was any trauma during the surgery or if the eyelid is not functioning properly, this could lead to corneal inflammation or damage, which might explain the swelling and visual disturbances.
- Infection or Inflammation: Post-surgical infections can sometimes occur, leading to localized symptoms in one eye. An ophthalmologist should evaluate this possibility.
- Nerve Damage: While rare, surgical procedures can sometimes inadvertently affect the nerves around the eye, leading to symptoms like pain or altered sensation.
- Allergic Reactions: Although less likely, an allergic reaction to the anesthetic used during surgery could potentially cause localized symptoms in one eye.
3. Potential for Improvement: The timeline for recovery and improvement can vary significantly from person to person. While some patients see gradual improvement over weeks to months, others may require additional interventions. If your symptoms do not improve or worsen, it is crucial to seek further evaluation from an eye specialist who can conduct a thorough examination, including imaging studies if necessary.
4. Acupuncture and Alternative Treatments: While acupuncture may provide some relief for certain conditions, its efficacy for post-surgical complications is not well-documented in scientific literature. It may be worth discussing with a healthcare provider who specializes in integrative medicine to see if it could be a complementary approach alongside conventional treatments.
5. Follow-Up Care: Given the complexity of your symptoms, I recommend continuing to seek care from an ophthalmologist who specializes in post-operative eye care. They can provide a more detailed assessment and may suggest treatments such as corticosteroids for inflammation, additional lubricants for dryness, or even further surgical intervention if necessary.
In summary, while some post-surgical symptoms can improve over time, persistent issues, especially those localized to one eye, should be thoroughly investigated. It is essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare providers and advocate for your health until you find a satisfactory resolution to your symptoms.
