Feeling cool and numb in the chest area, with weakness in the left hand?

Hello: A few days ago, I had a fever and went to the emergency room.
After two days, I noticed that I had a persistent cough and a hoarse voice, so I continued to seek treatment at an ENT clinic.
After taking two packets of medication, I suddenly experienced palpitations last night (which I have never had before), along with numbness in both hands.
Today, I returned to the clinic to inquire if this could be a side effect.
The doctor indicated that the prescribed medications do not typically cause palpitations.
However, I have felt a persistent cool and numb sensation in my chest all day, and tonight my left hand started to feel weak and numb.
Should I seek medical evaluation? P.S.
I have occasionally experienced chest tightness in the past.

It's understandable to feel anxious and concerned about your health, especially when experiencing symptoms like chest discomfort, weakness, and heart palpitations. Given your recent medical history, including a fever, persistent cough, and the new onset of heart palpitations and numbness, it is crucial to take these symptoms seriously.

First and foremost, any new or worsening symptoms related to your heart or chest should prompt immediate medical attention. Heart palpitations, especially when accompanied by numbness in the hands or weakness, can be indicative of various underlying conditions, some of which may require urgent care. While the doctor you consulted mentioned that the medications prescribed do not typically cause palpitations, it’s essential to consider that individual reactions to medications can vary. Additionally, the combination of your recent illness and the stress of your symptoms could contribute to your current state.

Given your history of occasional chest discomfort, it’s vital to differentiate between anxiety-related symptoms and potential cardiac issues. Anxiety can manifest physically, leading to sensations like chest tightness, palpitations, and numbness. However, these symptoms can also be signs of more serious conditions, such as arrhythmias, angina, or even a heart attack, particularly if they are new or have changed in intensity.

Here are some key points to consider regarding when to seek medical attention:
1. New Symptoms: Since you mentioned that heart palpitations and numbness in your hands are new symptoms, this warrants further evaluation. It's essential to rule out any serious conditions.

2. Severity and Duration: If your symptoms are severe, persistent, or worsening, you should seek immediate medical care. For example, if you experience chest pain that lasts more than a few minutes, is accompanied by shortness of breath, sweating, or nausea, you should call emergency services.

3. Associated Symptoms: Pay attention to other symptoms that may accompany your chest discomfort, such as dizziness, fainting, or severe fatigue. These can provide important clues to your healthcare provider.

4. Previous Health Conditions: If you have a history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or other cardiovascular issues, it’s even more critical to seek medical attention promptly.

5. Mental Health Considerations: Anxiety can exacerbate physical symptoms, leading to a cycle of worry and discomfort. If you find that your anxiety is overwhelming, consider discussing this with a healthcare provider who can help you manage both your physical and mental health.

In conclusion, given your recent symptoms and medical history, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include an electrocardiogram (ECG), blood tests, and possibly imaging studies to assess your heart's health. They can also help determine if your symptoms are related to anxiety or if there is an underlying medical condition that needs to be addressed. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health.
