Concerns about HIV/AIDS?

Hello doctor, about six months ago, I had a biopsy because I had two lesions on my foreskin, and it was diagnosed as genital warts.
However, I haven't had a girlfriend for the past three to four years and have only been masturbating to satisfy my sexual urges.
After being diagnosed with genital warts, I became very anxious (not knowing how I contracted it since my sexual activity was a long time ago).
Should I get tested for HIV? My doctor only performed cryotherapy and did not recommend any blood tests.
Additionally, I had a military physical examination a year and a half ago, and everything was normal.
So, I would like to know if I should get tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)?

Hello: The military service physical examination includes tests for HIV and syphilis.
Genital warts are somewhat unique, as they may not appear quickly after infection; reports indicate they can take up to two years to develop.
Additionally, condoms do not provide 100% protection.
If engaging in unsafe sexual practices, it is advisable to undergo regular screenings for sexually transmitted infections.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including human papillomavirus (HPV), it is essential to understand the implications of a diagnosis and the importance of regular testing. Given your situation, where you have been diagnosed with genital warts (caused by HPV), it is prudent to consider further testing for other STDs, including HIV.

Firstly, HPV is a common virus that can lead to genital warts and, in some cases, cervical cancer. While the presence of HPV does not directly indicate that you have other STDs, it is crucial to recognize that individuals with one STD are at a higher risk of contracting others. This is primarily due to the behaviors that may lead to the transmission of these infections, such as unprotected sex or multiple sexual partners.

In your case, although you have not engaged in sexual intercourse for several years, the diagnosis of genital warts suggests that you were exposed to HPV at some point in the past. The virus can remain dormant in the body for years, which means that it is possible to have contracted it long before you noticed any symptoms. This can understandably lead to anxiety and concern about your sexual health.

Regarding your question about getting tested for HIV, it is generally recommended that anyone diagnosed with an STD undergoes testing for other sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. This is particularly important if you have had any potential exposure to the virus, even if it was years ago. Testing for HIV is a straightforward process and can provide peace of mind. Many healthcare providers recommend routine HIV testing, especially for individuals with a history of STDs, as early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes.

Additionally, it is important to consider that while your doctor performed a procedure to treat the genital warts, they may not have deemed it necessary to conduct further STD testing at that time. However, you have the right to request additional tests if you feel it is warranted. Open communication with your healthcare provider is key; do not hesitate to express your concerns and ask for comprehensive testing.

In summary, given your diagnosis of HPV and genital warts, it is advisable to get tested for other STDs, including HIV. Regular screening is an essential part of maintaining sexual health, especially after an STD diagnosis. If you have any lingering concerns or symptoms, or if you feel uncertain about your sexual health status, seeking further evaluation and testing from a healthcare professional is a responsible and proactive step. Remember, taking charge of your health is crucial, and being informed can help alleviate anxiety and lead to better health outcomes.
