Persistent Lip Peeling and Yellow Skin: Causes and Solutions - Dermatology

Chapped lips often accompanied by the formation of yellowish scales?

Hello doctor, my lips are often peeling and very dry.
They also become red, swollen, and painful, sometimes even oozing some fluid.
The skin that grows back is yellow and thick, and it falls off after a few days.
This situation keeps recurring and hasn't improved despite seeing doctors.
They all suggested that I apply petroleum jelly more often, but even when I apply it before bed, I still wake up to find yellow skin on my lips and a slight odor.
The doctor also prescribed an ointment called "Cortibalm," but it hasn't been very effective.
After applying it, there is no stinging, but my lips remain swollen and continue to develop yellow skin.
This condition has been bothering me for a long time, and it is really uncomfortable.

More Info

Persistent lip peeling and yellow skin can be quite distressing and may indicate an underlying dermatological condition. The symptoms you describe—dry, peeling lips that become red, swollen, and sometimes ooze—suggest a possible case of cheilitis, which can be caused by several factors including environmental conditions, allergic reactions, or underlying skin conditions.

Causes:
1. Environmental Factors: Exposure to cold, dry air can lead to chapped lips. If you are in a dry climate, this could exacerbate the condition.

2. Allergic Reactions: Ingredients in lip products, toothpaste, or even food can cause allergic reactions, leading to inflammation and peeling.

3. Infections: Fungal or bacterial infections can cause symptoms like those you describe. For instance, angular cheilitis, which occurs at the corners of the mouth, can be caused by yeast infections.

4. Skin Conditions: Conditions like eczema or psoriasis can also manifest on the lips, leading to chronic peeling and discomfort.

5. Dehydration: Insufficient hydration can lead to dry skin, including on the lips.
Solutions:
1. Moisturization: While you mentioned using Vaseline, it is crucial to apply it frequently throughout the day, especially after eating or drinking. Consider using a thicker ointment or a lip balm that contains ceramides or hyaluronic acid, which can help retain moisture.

2. Avoid Irritants: Identify and avoid any potential allergens. This includes switching to a fragrance-free toothpaste and avoiding flavored lip products.

3. Hydration: Ensure you are drinking enough water throughout the day. Dehydration can worsen skin conditions.

4. Topical Treatments: If your doctor prescribed a medication like "可貝軟膏" (likely a topical steroid or anti-inflammatory), continue using it as directed. However, if it does not provide relief, follow up with your healthcare provider for alternative treatments.

5. Humidifier: If you are in a dry environment, using a humidifier at home can help maintain moisture in the air and prevent your skin from drying out.

6. Dietary Considerations: Ensure you are getting enough vitamins, particularly B vitamins and zinc, which are essential for skin health.
When to Seek Further Help:
If your symptoms persist despite these measures, or if you notice any signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, or pus), it is essential to consult a dermatologist. They may perform a patch test to identify any allergies or recommend a stronger topical treatment or systemic medication if necessary.

In summary, persistent lip peeling and yellow skin can be multifactorial, and addressing the underlying causes is crucial for effective treatment. Regular moisturizing, avoiding irritants, and maintaining hydration are key steps to managing your symptoms. If your condition does not improve, further evaluation by a healthcare professional is warranted.
