Menstrual period has not arrived?

My menstrual cycle has always been regular, with previous periods occurring from February 12 to February 18 and from March 12 to March 18.
However, I have not gotten my period for April yet.
Recently, I had sexual intercourse on April 11 and April 15 (without a condom, but ejaculation was on my abdomen).
Additionally, I just went through a breakup a month ago and have since started seeing someone else.
I have been feeling down, stressed about exams, staying up late, and feeling quite anxious.
Could I be pregnant? I'm really worried...
What should I do?

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/04/15

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the chances of getting pregnant are low.
It is best to take preventive measures at all times and not to rely on the safe period.
If your period is more than a week late, it is advisable to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

It's understandable to feel anxious about a missed period, especially when there have been recent changes in your life, such as a breakup and the stress of exams. Stress can indeed have an impact on your menstrual cycle, potentially leading to delayed or missed periods.
When it comes to pregnancy, the timing of your menstrual cycle is crucial. If your periods have been regular and you have missed one, it could indicate pregnancy, especially if you have had unprotected intercourse during your fertile window. However, stress and lifestyle changes can also affect your hormonal balance, which in turn can lead to irregularities in your cycle.
In your case, the combination of emotional stress from your breakup, the pressure of exams, and changes in your sleep patterns could contribute to your missed period. Stress can lead to the release of cortisol, a hormone that can interfere with the normal functioning of the reproductive hormones, potentially delaying ovulation or menstruation.
If you are concerned about the possibility of being pregnant, the best course of action is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are generally accurate if taken after a missed period. If the test is positive, it would be advisable to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider to confirm the pregnancy and discuss your options moving forward. If the test is negative and your period does not arrive soon, it might be worth consulting a healthcare professional to explore other potential reasons for the delay, such as hormonal imbalances or other health issues.

In addition to addressing your immediate concerns about pregnancy, it’s important to take care of your mental health during this stressful time. Consider engaging in stress-reducing activities such as exercise, meditation, or talking to a friend or therapist about your feelings. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including proper sleep, nutrition, and self-care, can also help regulate your menstrual cycle and improve your overall well-being.

In summary, while stress and recent life changes can affect your menstrual cycle, it is important to take a pregnancy test to determine if you are pregnant. Regardless of the outcome, addressing your mental health and seeking support can help you navigate this challenging time.
