Brown discharge
Hello Doctor: I usually get my period at the end of the month.
In March, I didn't have my period for the entire month and it only came on April 4th for three to four days.
A few days later, I had sexual intercourse with my boyfriend, and he ejaculated inside me.
After another three to four days, I noticed some brown discharge when I wiped after using the bathroom, but it wasn't much and didn't stain my pad.
The brown discharge has now lasted for three days.
Should I be concerned about my health?
A-Ting, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/04/18

Hello, the brown discharge may indicate a small amount of bleeding, and there are many factors that can contribute to intermenstrual bleeding, such as age, environment, lifestyle, stress, emotional instability, weight changes, medications, emergency contraceptive pills, diet, polycystic ovary syndrome, lesions of the uterus or cervix, infections, ovulation, and pregnancy, among others.
It is advisable to consult a gynecologist if the symptoms persist or worsen to check for hormonal imbalances or other causes.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

More Info
Brown discharge can be a common occurrence and is often not a cause for concern. However, understanding its potential causes and when to seek medical help is important for your health.
Possible Causes of Brown Discharge
1. Menstrual Cycle Variations: Brown discharge can occur at the beginning or end of your menstrual cycle. It often represents old blood that is taking longer to exit the body. If you had your period recently, this could simply be leftover blood from your last cycle.
2. Ovulation: Some women experience brown discharge during ovulation, which is typically around the middle of their cycle. This can be due to hormonal changes that cause slight spotting.
3. Implantation Bleeding: If you had unprotected sex and are concerned about pregnancy, brown discharge could be a sign of implantation bleeding, which occurs when a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. This usually happens about a week before your expected period.
4. Hormonal Imbalances: Fluctuations in hormones, whether due to stress, weight changes, or other factors, can lead to irregular bleeding or discharge.
5. Infections: In some cases, brown discharge can be a sign of an infection, especially if accompanied by other symptoms like itching, burning, or an unusual odor. Conditions such as bacterial vaginosis or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can cause abnormal discharge.
6. Cervical or Uterine Issues: Conditions like polyps, fibroids, or endometriosis can lead to abnormal bleeding or discharge. If the brown discharge is persistent or accompanied by pain, it may warrant further investigation.
When to Seek Help
While brown discharge is often normal, you should consult a healthcare provider if you experience any of the following:
- Persistent Discharge: If the brown discharge lasts more than a few days or is accompanied by other symptoms.
- Pain: If you experience pelvic pain, cramping, or discomfort.
- Unusual Odor: A strong or foul odor accompanying the discharge may indicate an infection.
- Heavy Bleeding: If you notice that the discharge becomes heavy or is mixed with bright red blood.
- Other Symptoms: If you experience fever, chills, or any other systemic symptoms.
Conclusion
In your case, since you mentioned that the brown discharge has been ongoing for three days after having your period and following sexual intercourse, it may not be a cause for alarm, especially if it is not accompanied by other concerning symptoms. However, if you have any doubts or if the discharge persists, it is always best to consult with a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current symptoms.
Taking care of your reproductive health is essential, and being aware of your body's signals can help you maintain it. If you have further questions or concerns, don't hesitate to reach out to a medical professional.
