White Flakes in Urine: When to Consult a Urologist - Urology

There are substances in the urine that resemble skin flakes?

Dr.
Du, I'm back again.
After my last visit to the urology department (since I inquired about white floating particles in my urine last October), I had three consecutive appointments until January this year.
During that visit, my urinalysis came back normal, and the doctor believed there was no issue with my urine, but there was a problem with bladder retention.
After taking medication for three months, I underwent an abdominal ultrasound to monitor a liver cyst and a gallbladder polyp, and my kidneys were found to be normal.
To follow up on an adrenal tumor, I had an MRI this month, which indicated that I should return for follow-up in a year.
My kidneys are also normal, with a glomerular filtration rate of 111 and creatinine of 0.6.
However, I still notice something resembling dandruff in my urine.
Should I see a doctor about this? Am I being too anxious?

Hello: If multiple urine tests are normal, then there is no issue.

More Info

Based on the information provided, it seems that you are experiencing ongoing concerns regarding the presence of white flakes or particles in your urine, despite previous evaluations indicating normal kidney function and no significant issues. Here’s a comprehensive response to your situation.

Understanding White Flakes in Urine
The appearance of white flakes or particles in urine can be concerning, and it is understandable that you are feeling anxious about it. Generally, urine can contain various substances, and the presence of white flakes may be due to several factors:
1. Mucus: The urinary tract naturally produces mucus, which can sometimes appear as white flakes in urine. This is usually harmless and can be a normal finding.

2. Crystals: Urine can also contain crystals, which may form due to various reasons, including dehydration, dietary factors, or metabolic conditions. Crystals can appear as white or cloudy particles.

3. Infection: While you have had normal urine tests, urinary tract infections (UTIs) can sometimes cause changes in urine appearance. If you experience symptoms such as burning during urination, increased frequency, or urgency, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider.

4. Other Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as kidney stones or issues related to the bladder, can also lead to changes in urine appearance.

When to Consult a Urologist
Given that you have already undergone several evaluations and your kidney function appears normal, it may not be immediately necessary to see a urologist solely for the presence of white flakes. However, consider the following:
- Persistent Symptoms: If the white flakes persist or if you develop new symptoms (e.g., pain, changes in urination patterns, or any discomfort), it would be prudent to consult a urologist for further evaluation.

- Monitoring: Since you have a history of urinary retention and other concerns, it is essential to continue monitoring your symptoms. If you notice any changes in your urinary habits or if the flakes become more pronounced, seek medical advice.

- Anxiety Management: It’s natural to feel anxious about health concerns, especially when symptoms persist. If your anxiety is affecting your daily life, consider discussing this with a healthcare professional who can provide support or strategies to manage your concerns.

Conclusion
In summary, while the presence of white flakes in urine can be benign, it is essential to remain vigilant about any accompanying symptoms. Since you have had normal evaluations, it may not be an urgent issue, but monitoring your condition and consulting a urologist if symptoms change or worsen is advisable. Remember, your health is paramount, and seeking a second opinion or further evaluation is always within your rights as a patient. If you feel uncertain or anxious, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for reassurance and guidance.
