Strange sensations in the upper abdomen?
Hello, Doctor.
Recently, I've been experiencing a strange sensation in my upper abdomen, similar to a feeling of pressure located around the end of the sternum.
It doesn't hurt when I press on it, but it feels like something is there.
My appetite is good, and I have no issues with eating.
However, when I burp, I feel a sour sensation in my throat.
Previously, due to a persistent dry cough and a feeling of something in my throat, I consulted an ENT specialist who examined me and said there was nothing abnormal in my throat.
They suggested it might be gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Could this have an impact? Since I live far from the hospital, I would like to know if it's necessary to go to a large hospital for further examination.
Thank you, and I wish you good health.

Hello, sir.
It should just be a mild digestive issue with slight acid reflux.
Just pay attention to your diet and eat smaller, more frequent meals.
Changhua Hospital cares about your health.

When experiencing upper abdominal discomfort, especially with symptoms like a feeling of pressure near the sternum, it is essential to approach the situation with caution and seek medical advice. Given your description, it seems you are dealing with a complex set of symptoms that could be related to various underlying conditions.
Firstly, the sensation of pressure in the upper abdomen, particularly around the area where the sternum ends, could be indicative of several gastrointestinal issues. One possibility is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which you mentioned was suggested by your ENT specialist. GERD occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, leading to symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation, and sometimes a sensation of a lump in the throat. The acid reflux can also cause discomfort in the upper abdomen and may lead to a feeling of fullness or pressure.
Another potential cause for your symptoms could be related to the gallbladder or biliary system, especially if there is a history of gallstones or gallbladder disease in your medical history. Gallbladder issues can manifest as pain or discomfort in the upper right abdomen, but they can also cause referred pain or discomfort in the upper middle abdomen. If you have had previous gallbladder issues, it may be worth discussing this with your physician.
Additionally, the sensation of something being "stuck" or pressure in the upper abdomen could also be related to issues with the stomach itself, such as gastritis or peptic ulcers. These conditions can cause discomfort and may be exacerbated by certain foods or stress. If you are experiencing any changes in appetite or weight loss, these could be red flags that warrant further investigation.
Given your symptoms and the fact that you have already consulted with an ENT specialist, it would be prudent to follow up with a gastroenterologist. A gastroenterologist specializes in digestive system disorders and can perform necessary evaluations, such as an upper endoscopy or imaging studies, to determine the underlying cause of your discomfort. They may also recommend lifestyle modifications or medications to manage symptoms related to GERD or other gastrointestinal issues.
While it may be inconvenient to travel to a larger hospital, it is important to prioritize your health. If your symptoms persist or worsen, or if you experience additional symptoms such as severe pain, vomiting, or changes in bowel habits, seeking immediate medical attention is crucial. In some cases, upper abdominal discomfort can be a sign of more serious conditions, such as pancreatitis or cardiac issues, especially if accompanied by other symptoms like shortness of breath or radiating pain.
In summary, while your symptoms may be related to GERD or other gastrointestinal issues, it is essential to consult with a gastroenterologist for a comprehensive evaluation. They can provide a tailored approach to your symptoms and determine if further testing or treatment is necessary. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, so do not hesitate to seek the care you need.
