Retinal issues
Hello, doctor.
Can saline solution be used to wash my eyes? I have retinal degeneration; will that be too irritating? Additionally, when I turn my head to the right, I experience a kind of light and shadow sensation, but I don't have this when I turn to the left.
Could this be caused by retinal degeneration? My last examination was in February of this year; do I need to have another dilated eye exam? Thank you, doctor.

Hello, may I ask if saline solution can be used to wash the eyes? It is not generally recommended unless there are specific circumstances.
Wishing you safety and health.

Using saline solution to wash your eyes can be a topic of concern, especially for individuals with retinal issues such as retinal degeneration. While saline solution is generally considered safe for rinsing the eyes in certain situations, it is not typically recommended for routine eye washing unless specifically advised by a healthcare professional. The reason for this caution is that saline solutions can sometimes cause irritation or discomfort, particularly if the solution is not isotonic or if it contains impurities.
In your case, with a history of retinal degeneration, it is crucial to be cautious. Retinal degeneration can lead to changes in vision and sensitivity, and using saline solution could potentially exacerbate any existing discomfort or irritation. If you are experiencing symptoms such as light flashes or shadows in your vision when turning your head, it is essential to consult with your eye care provider. These symptoms could indicate changes in your retinal condition that may require further evaluation.
Regarding your question about the need for a dilated eye exam (散瞳檢查), it is generally advisable to have regular check-ups, especially if you have a history of retinal issues. The frequency of these exams can depend on the severity of your condition and the recommendations of your eye care provider. If your last examination was in February and you have noticed new symptoms, it would be prudent to schedule another appointment. A dilated exam allows the doctor to get a better view of the retina and assess any changes that may have occurred since your last visit.
In summary, while saline solution can be used in specific circumstances, it is not the best choice for routine eye washing, especially for someone with retinal degeneration. Always consult with your eye care professional before using any solutions in your eyes. Regular follow-ups and eye exams are critical in managing your condition and ensuring that any changes in your vision are promptly addressed. If you have any concerns about your symptoms or the management of your eye health, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice and treatment options.
