Regarding post-operative issues after hemorrhoid ligation?

Hello, doctor.
In April, I underwent a procedure for hemorrhoids, but a week later, I started experiencing frequent urination (almost feeling the need to go at all times).
I also noticed a lump near the anal area (close to the prostate) that feels about the size of a ping pong ball, which has made my bowel movements difficult (very thin).
Could you please explain what might be causing this? The hemorrhoids I had treated have not disappeared and seem to have gotten larger.
The frequent urination is severely affecting my daily routine, as I need to go to the bathroom almost every ten minutes.
Will this condition resolve on its own? Thank you, doctor.

Hello! It is recommended to visit a colorectal surgeon to evaluate whether a hemorrhoidectomy is necessary.

After undergoing hemorrhoid banding, it is not uncommon for patients to experience a range of complications, including frequent urination and pain. Your symptoms, particularly the increased urgency to urinate and the presence of a lump near the anal area, warrant careful evaluation.

Firstly, frequent urination can be attributed to several factors. One possibility is that the procedure may have caused some irritation or inflammation in the pelvic region, which can affect the bladder and lead to increased urinary frequency. Additionally, if there is any swelling or pressure from the hemorrhoids or surrounding tissues, it could potentially irritate the bladder, causing you to feel the need to urinate more often.

The lump you described, which feels like a ping-pong ball, could be a thrombosed hemorrhoid or a residual hemorrhoid that has not yet resolved after the banding procedure. Hemorrhoids can sometimes become larger or more prominent after treatment due to inflammation or the formation of scar tissue. If the banding did not effectively eliminate the hemorrhoids, they may still be present and could be contributing to your discomfort and changes in bowel habits.

The change in your bowel movements, particularly the thinner stools, could also be related to the presence of the lump. If there is any obstruction or pressure in the anal canal, it can lead to changes in how stool is expelled. This can result in straining during bowel movements, which may further exacerbate your symptoms.

It is essential to address these concerns with your healthcare provider. They may recommend a physical examination to assess the lump and evaluate the condition of your hemorrhoids. In some cases, additional treatments may be necessary, such as further banding, sclerotherapy, or even surgical intervention if the hemorrhoids are particularly problematic.

In terms of your urinary symptoms, your doctor may also want to evaluate your bladder function and rule out any other underlying conditions, such as a urinary tract infection or prostate issues, especially considering the proximity of the anal area to the prostate gland in males.

As for whether these symptoms will resolve, it largely depends on the underlying cause. If the frequent urination is due to inflammation or irritation from the hemorrhoid banding, it may improve as the area heals. However, if there is a more significant issue at play, such as persistent hemorrhoids or another complication, further treatment may be necessary.

In summary, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms in detail. They can provide a thorough evaluation and recommend appropriate management strategies to alleviate your discomfort and improve your quality of life. Do not hesitate to seek medical attention, as timely intervention can prevent further complications and help you return to your normal routine.
