Am I Really Suffering from Anxiety Disorder? Your Symptoms - Psychiatry

Could this be anxiety disorder?

Hello Doctor, I am a junior student.
I often find myself dwelling on trivial matters for a long time, even spending time online searching for information.
This makes it difficult for me to focus on other tasks.
Additionally, I have high expectations of myself, but the reality is that I am not particularly smart and I struggle with time management, often procrastinating until the last minute.
The pressure of looming deadlines makes it hard for me to breathe.
Because of this, I visited a psychiatrist a few days ago.
After explaining my situation, the doctor prescribed Escitalopram to be taken once a day, stating that it would take a month to see effects and should be taken for at least six months.
Does this mean I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder? After the appointment, I felt somewhat relieved, but while writing this inquiry at night, I suddenly felt the weight of the label "I am an anxiety disorder patient," which feels surreal and inexplicably makes me anxious.
Am I truly suffering from an anxiety disorder, or am I just someone who is easily anxious? If my condition is not severe enough to be classified as an anxiety disorder, will taking this medication affect my learning abilities (such as memory)? Thank you, Doctor.

Hello, anxiety can be a personality trait, a disorder, or a state, but these require a period of observation and follow-up.
Regardless of the situation, appropriate intervention can lead to improvement.
It is recommended that you collaborate with your outpatient physician and discuss your concerns during your next appointment.
Wishing you all the best.

It sounds like you are going through a challenging time, and I commend you for seeking help and trying to understand your feelings better. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing significant anxiety related to various aspects of your life, including academic pressures and self-expectations. You mentioned that you often dwell on minor issues, which can lead to a cycle of worry and stress that affects your ability to focus on other tasks. This is a common experience for many individuals dealing with anxiety.

From what you've shared, it appears that you have been diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) by a mental health professional, as indicated by your prescription for Escitalopram. GAD is characterized by excessive worry about various aspects of life, including work, health, and social interactions, often leading to physical symptoms such as restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and sleep disturbances. The fact that you are feeling overwhelmed by deadlines and have difficulty managing your time effectively aligns with common symptoms of GAD.

It's important to understand that receiving a diagnosis does not define you; rather, it is a way for healthcare professionals to identify the challenges you are facing and to provide appropriate treatment. The label of "anxiety disorder" can feel daunting, but it is also a step toward understanding your experiences and finding effective coping strategies. Many people experience anxiety to varying degrees, and it is a normal human emotion. However, when it becomes persistent and interferes with daily functioning, it may warrant a diagnosis and treatment.

Regarding your concerns about the medication, Escitalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) commonly prescribed for anxiety and depression. It works by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain, which can help improve mood and reduce anxiety. While it may take several weeks to notice the full effects of the medication, many individuals find it beneficial in managing their symptoms. It is essential to follow your doctor's instructions regarding dosage and duration of treatment.

As for your worries about the impact of medication on your learning and memory, it is important to note that while some individuals may experience side effects, many do not. Common side effects of SSRIs can include nausea, fatigue, or changes in sleep patterns, but these often diminish over time. If you notice any significant changes in your cognitive abilities or other concerning side effects, it is crucial to communicate this with your healthcare provider. They can help you weigh the benefits of the medication against any potential drawbacks and make adjustments if necessary.

In addition to medication, consider incorporating other strategies to manage your anxiety. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for anxiety disorders and can help you develop coping mechanisms and challenge negative thought patterns. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation and deep-breathing exercises, can also be beneficial in reducing anxiety and improving focus.

Lastly, remember that you are not alone in this journey. Many people experience anxiety, and seeking support from friends, family, or support groups can be incredibly helpful. Sharing your feelings and experiences with others can provide relief and foster a sense of community.

In summary, it seems that you are experiencing symptoms consistent with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and your treatment plan with Escitalopram is a step toward managing your anxiety. It's essential to stay in communication with your healthcare provider and explore additional therapeutic options to support your mental health. Take care of yourself, and remember that seeking help is a sign of strength.
