Tongue issues?

There are white spots under the tongue, and I feel two round bumps in front of the white spots, but the surface of those bumps is not white.
I just had oral surgery done about a month ago on my left cheek, and I recently noticed the white spots on the right side of my tongue.
Could you please tell me what these symptoms might indicate?

The presence of white spots on the tongue can be concerning, especially after undergoing oral surgery. Based on your description, it seems that you have noticed white spots on the right side of your tongue, along with two round bumps that do not have white spots on their surface. Understanding the potential causes and implications of these symptoms is essential for proper management.

Firstly, white spots on the tongue can arise from various conditions. One common cause is oral thrush, a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida yeast. This condition typically presents as creamy white lesions that can be wiped off, leaving a red, inflamed surface underneath. Oral thrush is more likely to occur in individuals with weakened immune systems, those taking antibiotics, or those with certain medical conditions such as diabetes.

Another possibility is leukoplakia, which refers to white patches that cannot be scraped off. This condition can be benign but may also indicate precancerous changes, especially in individuals who smoke or use tobacco products. It's essential to monitor these spots and consult a healthcare provider if they persist or change in appearance.

Additionally, the bumps you mentioned could be enlarged papillae or taste buds, which can become inflamed due to irritation or trauma, especially after surgery. This inflammation can sometimes lead to a white appearance. If these bumps are painful or if you notice any changes in your ability to taste, it would be prudent to seek further evaluation.

Given that you recently underwent surgery on your left cheek, it is also possible that the healing process could contribute to changes in your oral mucosa, including the appearance of white spots or bumps. Post-surgical inflammation or irritation can lead to temporary changes in the oral cavity, which may resolve as healing progresses.

In any case, it is crucial to maintain good oral hygiene, including gentle brushing of the tongue and avoiding irritants such as spicy or acidic foods. Staying hydrated and avoiding tobacco products can also help in the healing process.

If the white spots persist for more than two weeks, change in color, or are accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, difficulty swallowing, or fever, it is essential to consult an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist or a dentist. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including a biopsy if necessary, to determine the exact cause of the white spots and recommend appropriate treatment.

In summary, while white spots on the tongue can arise from various benign conditions, they may also indicate more serious issues. Given your recent surgery, it is advisable to monitor the situation closely and seek professional advice if you have any concerns. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure a smooth recovery.
