Sudden nipple pain?
Recently, I haven't had my menstrual period, but my nipple suddenly feels very painful with a dull ache.
It hurts whenever I touch it, and the right nipple feels swollen.
Occasionally, I used to have some white discharge, and I'm not sure if it's related.
I also have a condition where my nipple is inverted.

Dr. Chen Jiaming reply Surgery
It is recommended to visit a breast surgery clinic for a physical examination by a physician to confirm the possible causes of your pain, as it cannot be determined solely based on your description.
Before your appointment, you may try to reduce local irritation or friction from clothing.

More Info
Sudden nipple pain can be concerning, especially when it occurs outside of the menstrual cycle. There are several potential causes for this type of pain, and understanding these can help in determining the appropriate course of action.
1. Hormonal Fluctuations: Even if you are not currently menstruating, hormonal changes can still occur in your body. Hormones such as estrogen and progesterone can influence breast tissue, leading to tenderness or pain. This is particularly common in women who experience premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or have irregular cycles.
2. Infection or Inflammation: Conditions such as mastitis (an infection of the breast tissue) can cause localized pain and swelling. This is more common in breastfeeding women but can occur in non-lactating women as well. Symptoms may include redness, warmth, and possibly a fever. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention.
3. Ductal Ectasia: This condition occurs when a milk duct beneath the nipple dilates, fills with fluid, and thickens. It can lead to nipple pain and discharge, which may be white or greenish. This condition is more common in women who are nearing menopause.
4. Fibrocystic Changes: Many women experience fibrocystic breast changes, which can cause lumps, tenderness, and pain in the breast tissue. These changes are often linked to hormonal fluctuations and can occur at any time during the menstrual cycle.
5. Nipple Trauma or Irritation: Sometimes, physical irritation from clothing, vigorous exercise, or even sexual activity can lead to nipple pain. If you have recently changed your bra or engaged in activities that may have caused friction, this could be a simple explanation.
6. Breast Cysts or Tumors: While less common, breast cysts or tumors can cause localized pain. If you notice a lump or if the pain persists, it is crucial to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
7. Paget's Disease of the Nipple: This is a rare form of breast cancer that can cause changes in the skin and tissue of the nipple, including pain and discharge. If you have any concerns about changes in your nipple or breast tissue, it is essential to seek medical advice.
Given your description of experiencing pain primarily in the right nipple, along with a history of white discharge and a retracted nipple, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend a clinical breast examination, imaging studies such as a mammogram or ultrasound, and possibly a biopsy if there are any concerning findings.
In summary, while sudden nipple pain can arise from various benign conditions, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as discharge, swelling, or changes in the appearance of the nipple or breast, seeking medical evaluation is crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment.
