Gastroenteritis with unusual objects in the stool?

Hello, I have been experiencing gastroenteritis for over a week, with symptoms mainly including abdominal pain and back pain.
I haven't had diarrhea or vomiting, but I do feel a bit constipated and have been experiencing bloating.
However, today I noticed that my stool was somewhat fibrous and loose, and there was even a white, fibrous object floating on top that resembled mold.
I would like to know what that might be and how I should handle this situation.

Lin, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/06/02

You can take a photo or keep it to show the doctor and see if it can be tested.

When it comes to unusual fiber-like objects in stool, particularly in the context of gastroenteritis, it is essential to consider several factors that could contribute to your symptoms and the appearance of your stool. Gastroenteritis typically presents with symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and sometimes fever. However, your experience of constipation, bloating, and the discovery of unusual fiber-like objects in your stool suggests that there may be additional factors at play.

The fiber-like objects you are observing could be a result of several possibilities. One common explanation is that they may be undigested food particles, particularly if you have recently altered your diet or consumed foods high in fiber. Foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can sometimes pass through the digestive system without being fully broken down, especially if there is a change in bowel habits or digestive function.
Another possibility is that these objects could be related to the gastrointestinal inflammation associated with gastroenteritis. Inflammation can affect the normal function of the intestines, leading to changes in digestion and absorption, which might result in the presence of unusual stool components. Additionally, if there is any mucosal irritation or damage, it could lead to the shedding of intestinal lining, which might appear as fiber-like material in the stool.

Given your symptoms of abdominal pain, back pain, and bloating, along with the unusual stool findings, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend further evaluation, including stool tests to rule out infections or other gastrointestinal conditions. In particular, they may want to check for the presence of pathogens, such as bacteria or parasites, that could be causing your gastroenteritis symptoms.

In the meantime, here are some general recommendations for managing your symptoms:
1. Hydration: Ensure you are drinking plenty of fluids to stay hydrated, especially if you are experiencing any gastrointestinal distress. Electrolyte solutions can be beneficial if you are losing fluids.

2. Dietary Adjustments: Consider a bland diet that is easy on the stomach. Foods such as bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast (often referred to as the BRAT diet) can help. Avoid high-fiber foods until your symptoms improve, as they may exacerbate bloating and discomfort.

3. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, including the frequency and consistency of your stool, as well as any new symptoms that may arise. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.

4. Avoid Self-Medication: While it may be tempting to take over-the-counter medications for gastrointestinal discomfort, it is best to consult with a healthcare provider before doing so, especially if you have ongoing symptoms.

5. Follow-Up: If your symptoms persist or worsen, or if you notice any additional concerning signs (such as blood in the stool, severe pain, or fever), seek medical attention promptly.

In conclusion, while the presence of unusual fiber-like objects in your stool can be concerning, it is essential to approach this symptom in the context of your overall health and recent gastrointestinal issues. Consulting with a healthcare professional will provide you with the best course of action tailored to your specific situation.
