Seeing flashing lights or bright spots in the vision?
Hello doctor, I have floaters and my myopia is about -4.00 diopters.
I've noticed that when I look at the sky, I see flashing bright spots, but I don't see them when I look at other things.
Sometimes, when I look at grid-like patterns, I also see diagonal streaks of light resembling rain.
I had an examination recently, and the doctor said there were no significant issues.
These symptoms were present before the examination.
Should I go for another check-up, or is regular monitoring sufficient?

Basically, if you have undergone a dilated eye exam and confirmed that there are no issues with the retina, there is no need to worry too much; regular check-ups will suffice.

More Info
Flashing lights in vision, often described as "flashes" or "lightning streaks," can be a concerning symptom for many individuals, especially those with pre-existing eye conditions such as myopia (nearsightedness) or floaters. Your experience of seeing flashes when looking at the sky or patterned surfaces could be related to several factors, and understanding when to seek further eye care is crucial.
Understanding Flashing Lights
Flashing lights in your vision can occur due to various reasons, primarily involving the retina and vitreous humor of the eye. The vitreous is a gel-like substance that fills the eye and can pull on the retina as it ages or changes shape. This pulling can stimulate the retina, leading to the perception of flashes of light. This phenomenon is often benign, especially in individuals with myopia, as the vitreous is more likely to undergo changes in these patients.
When to Seek Eye Care
While occasional flashes may not be alarming, there are specific circumstances under which you should seek immediate medical attention:
1. Increased Frequency or Intensity: If you notice that the flashes are becoming more frequent or intense, this could indicate a more serious issue, such as retinal detachment or tears.
2. Accompanied by Other Symptoms: If the flashes are accompanied by new floaters (especially a sudden increase), a shadow or curtain effect in your vision, or a significant decrease in vision, you should seek immediate care. These symptoms could indicate a retinal tear or detachment, which requires urgent treatment.
3. Persistent Symptoms: If the flashes persist over a prolonged period or if they change in nature, it is advisable to consult your eye care provider for a thorough examination.
Regular Eye Exams
Given your history of floaters and myopia, regular eye examinations are essential. Your eye doctor can monitor any changes in your retina and vitreous over time. If your previous examination showed no significant issues, it may not be necessary to return immediately unless you experience the concerning symptoms mentioned above. However, maintaining a routine check-up schedule is crucial, especially as you age or if your symptoms change.
Conclusion
In summary, while the flashes you are experiencing may be benign, it is essential to remain vigilant. If you notice any changes in the frequency or nature of these flashes, or if they are accompanied by other visual disturbances, do not hesitate to seek further evaluation from your eye care professional. Regular check-ups will help ensure that any potential issues are caught early, allowing for timely intervention if necessary. Always prioritize your eye health, and trust your instincts—if something feels off, it's better to get it checked out.
