Am I pregnant?
Hello, doctor.
My boyfriend and I have been intimate for the past two months, using the withdrawal method.
Last week, I had a cold and fever.
I used to be a night owl, but since I got sick, I've been very sleepy.
My period started on June 8th, and for the two days prior, the flow was normal, but today it's almost gone.
My menstrual cycle usually lasts about 7 days, but this time it only lasted 3 days, and I feel very tired.
What could be the reason for this?
Rui Rui, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/06/11

Hello Miss RuiRui: Your situation may be due to illness causing menstrual irregularities.
Irregular menstruation is characterized by changes in the timing or duration compared to your previous menstrual cycles.
It is recommended that you take a urine test to check for pregnancy.
If the test is negative, you can simply monitor your condition.

It sounds like you are experiencing a lot of anxiety and uncertainty regarding the possibility of being pregnant, especially given the recent changes in your menstrual cycle and your overall health. Let's break down your concerns and symptoms to provide some clarity.
Firstly, it's important to understand that the menstrual cycle can be influenced by various factors, including stress, illness, and hormonal changes. You mentioned that you had a cold and fever recently, which can certainly affect your body and potentially alter your menstrual cycle. A shorter period, like the one you experienced this time (only three days instead of your usual seven), can sometimes occur due to these factors.
Regarding your sexual activity, you mentioned that you and your boyfriend have been using the withdrawal method (pulling out) during intercourse. While this method can reduce the risk of pregnancy, it is not foolproof. Sperm can sometimes be present in pre-ejaculate fluid, and if there was any contact with vaginal secretions, there is a possibility of pregnancy. However, if you had a normal period afterward, it is generally a strong indicator that you are not pregnant.
The symptoms you are experiencing, such as increased fatigue and changes in your menstrual flow, could be attributed to your recent illness and the stress surrounding your concerns about pregnancy. Stress and anxiety can lead to physical symptoms, including fatigue and changes in sleep patterns, which you mentioned as well.
If you are still concerned about the possibility of being pregnant, the best course of action would be to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are quite accurate if taken after a missed period. If you are still unsure or if the test is positive, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance.
In addition to addressing your concerns about pregnancy, it may also be beneficial to explore ways to manage your anxiety. Techniques such as mindfulness, relaxation exercises, and talking to someone about your worries can be very helpful. If your anxiety continues to interfere with your daily life, seeking support from a mental health professional could provide you with additional coping strategies.
In summary, while your symptoms and changes in your menstrual cycle can be concerning, they may not necessarily indicate pregnancy, especially if you had a normal period. However, taking a pregnancy test and consulting with a healthcare provider can provide you with the reassurance and clarity you need. Remember to take care of your mental health as well, as stress and anxiety can significantly impact your overall well-being.
