Is a pregnancy test reliable 20 days after sexual intercourse?

Hello, my menstrual cycle is 28 days.
My last period was from May 16 to May 21.
I had unprotected intercourse on May 19 and 20, and I had protected intercourse during my predicted ovulation period without ejaculation.
On June 4, I noticed a large amount of discharge and became a bit concerned that it might be implantation discharge.
Therefore, I took a pregnancy test on June 8, which came back negative.
Is this test result reliable? Today, my period should have arrived, but it hasn't, and my periods are usually very regular.
Thank you.

Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/06/12

The menstrual cycle is 28 days long, with the last period occurring from May 16 to May 21.
Unprotected intercourse took place on May 19 and 20, while protected intercourse occurred during the predicted ovulation period, with no ejaculation.
On June 4, there was a significant amount of discharge, raising concerns about potential implantation discharge.
A pregnancy test was conducted on June 8, which returned a negative result.
Is this test result reliable? Today, the period is expected but has not arrived, and my menstrual cycles are usually very regular.
Answer: Take another pregnancy test on June 17.

When it comes to the reliability of a pregnancy test taken 20 days after unprotected sex, several factors need to be considered. Generally, home pregnancy tests (HPTs) are designed to detect the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. This typically occurs about 6 to 10 days after conception, but it can vary based on individual factors such as the timing of ovulation and implantation.

In your case, you mentioned that your last menstrual period started on May 16 and lasted until May 21, with unprotected intercourse occurring on May 19 and 20. Given that your menstrual cycle is typically 28 days, ovulation likely occurred around May 30. If fertilization occurred during the unprotected intercourse, implantation would likely happen around June 4 to June 10. Therefore, by June 8, when you took the pregnancy test, it is plausible that hCG levels would be detectable if pregnancy had occurred.

However, you received a negative result on the pregnancy test. This could mean a few things:
1. Timing of the Test: While 20 days post-intercourse is generally sufficient time for hCG to be detected, if ovulation occurred later than expected or if implantation was delayed, the hormone levels may not have risen enough to be detected by the test.

2. Test Sensitivity: Different pregnancy tests have varying sensitivities to hCG. Some tests can detect lower levels of hCG than others. If you used a less sensitive test, it might not have detected the hormone even if you were pregnant.

3. Menstrual Cycle Variability: Stress, hormonal imbalances, or other factors can affect your menstrual cycle. If your period is late, it could be due to reasons other than pregnancy, such as stress or changes in routine.

4. False Negatives: It is also possible to receive a false negative result if the test is taken too early or if the test is not performed correctly.

Given that your period is late and you typically have a regular cycle, it would be advisable to retest in a few days or consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation. A blood test for hCG can provide more definitive results, as it is more sensitive than home urine tests. Additionally, an ultrasound can help determine if there is a pregnancy and assess its viability.

In summary, while a pregnancy test taken 20 days after unprotected sex can be reliable, various factors can influence the outcome. If you have concerns about your menstrual cycle or potential pregnancy, seeking medical advice is the best course of action.
