Sudden discontinuation of contraceptive pills?
Hello Doctor: My period started on April 26, and I took the emergency contraceptive pill to delay my menstruation for a total of 37 days.
Three days after stopping the medication, my period came, but the flow was very light.
I then started a new course of emergency contraceptive pills and took them for 5 days, during which I felt nauseous every day, so I stopped taking them.
On June 14, my period came again.
Is this irregular menstruation? Should I take emergency contraceptive pills again to regulate my cycle?
Ap, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/06/14
Dr. Lin Manying reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello Ms.
Ap: If you start taking regular birth control pills at the beginning of a new cycle and then stop midway, you will typically experience bleeding again within 1-5 days after stopping the pills.
This is not considered a menstrual period, so June 14 is not your period.
If the bleeding does not stop after 3 days, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist for treatment.

Irregular periods after stopping birth control pills are a common concern for many women. When you take hormonal contraceptives, such as birth control pills, they regulate your menstrual cycle by providing a consistent level of hormones in your body. Once you stop taking these pills, your body may take some time to adjust back to its natural hormonal rhythm, which can lead to irregular periods.
In your case, you mentioned that you took the birth control pills for 37 days to delay your period and experienced a light menstrual flow shortly after stopping. This can be considered a withdrawal bleed, which is a common response after stopping hormonal contraceptives. The fact that you experienced a light period suggests that your body is beginning to respond to the hormonal changes, but it may not yet be fully back to its normal cycle.
After stopping the birth control pills, it is not unusual for women to experience changes in their menstrual cycle, including variations in flow, timing, and symptoms. Some women may have heavier or lighter periods, while others may experience missed periods altogether. This is often referred to as post-pill amenorrhea or irregular menstruation.
You also mentioned that after starting a new pack of birth control pills, you experienced nausea and decided to stop taking them. Nausea is a common side effect of hormonal contraceptives, and it can sometimes be a sign that the body is not tolerating the hormones well. If you are experiencing significant side effects, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider about alternative contraceptive methods or different formulations of birth control pills that may be better tolerated.
Regarding your question about whether to take birth control pills to regulate your cycle, it is essential to consider a few factors. If your periods remain irregular or if you are experiencing significant discomfort, it may be beneficial to discuss with your healthcare provider the possibility of resuming hormonal contraceptives. They can help determine if this is the right approach for you based on your medical history, current symptoms, and personal preferences.
In some cases, healthcare providers may recommend a short course of hormonal contraceptives to help regulate the menstrual cycle, especially if the irregularity is causing distress or if there are concerns about potential underlying conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders. However, it is crucial to have a thorough evaluation to rule out any underlying issues before starting any new medication.
In summary, irregular periods after stopping birth control pills are common and can be attributed to the body readjusting to its natural hormonal balance. If you are experiencing significant irregularities or side effects, it is best to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and potential treatment options. They can help you navigate your choices and find a solution that works best for your health and lifestyle.
