19 days post hernia surgery?
It has been 19 days since my inguinal hernia surgery, and the left side feels soft and slightly bulging compared to the normal right side where the mesh is placed.
Is this normal? How long will it take for it to completely subside and feel as firm as the normal side?

After undergoing inguinal hernia surgery, it is not uncommon to experience some degree of softness or swelling in the surgical area, particularly around the site where the mesh was placed. At 19 days post-surgery, it is important to understand that the healing process can vary significantly from person to person.
The presence of a soft or slightly bulging area on the side where the surgery was performed can be attributed to several factors. First, the body is still in the process of healing, which includes the reorganization of tissues and the gradual absorption of any fluids that may have accumulated post-operatively. This can lead to a temporary state of softness or swelling in the area.
Additionally, the surgical procedure itself can cause some disruption to the surrounding tissues, including nerves and blood vessels. This disruption can result in localized swelling and a feeling of softness, which may persist for several weeks or even months after the surgery. It is also important to note that the mesh used in hernia repairs is designed to integrate with the surrounding tissue over time, which can also contribute to changes in the texture and firmness of the area.
In terms of how long it will take for the area to feel more like the normal side, this can vary widely. Generally, it may take several weeks to a few months for the swelling to subside and for the area to regain its normal firmness. Factors such as individual healing rates, the extent of the surgery, and adherence to post-operative care instructions can all influence recovery time.
If you are concerned about the softness or any other symptoms you are experiencing, it is advisable to consult with your surgeon. They can provide a thorough examination and determine if what you are experiencing is within the normal range of post-operative recovery or if there are any complications that need to be addressed.
In the meantime, here are some general recommendations for post-operative care following inguinal hernia surgery:
1. Rest and Activity: While it is important to rest, gentle movement is encouraged to promote circulation and healing. Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activities until cleared by your surgeon.
2. Wound Care: Keep the surgical site clean and dry. Follow your surgeon's instructions regarding bathing and dressing changes.
3. Pain Management: Use prescribed pain medications as directed. Over-the-counter pain relievers may also be helpful, but consult with your doctor before taking them.
4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the surgical site for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge. If you experience severe pain, fever, or other concerning symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
5. Follow-Up Appointments: Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor your recovery progress and address any concerns.
In summary, experiencing some softness or swelling in the area of an inguinal hernia repair is generally considered normal, especially at 19 days post-surgery. However, if you have any concerns or if the symptoms worsen, it is always best to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice and reassurance.
