Possibility of transmission

Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask, if I go to buy underwear and the store offers the option to try on panties on-site, with a layer of my own underwear in between, and I only partially put them on without wearing them fully, is there a possibility of transmission if the previous person had a contagious sexually transmitted infection, such as gonorrhea or HPV? Could I potentially contaminate my own underwear if I wash them together in the washing machine? This is the first time I've encountered a store that allows trying on panties, and the more I think about it after trying them on, the more concerned I become.
Thank you for your response.

The transmission of infectious diseases through environmental contact is referred to as indirect transmission, which has a very low probability.
Essentially, we do not need to pay special attention to it and there is no need to worry too much.

When it comes to trying on underwear in a store, especially in a situation where you might be concerned about the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), it's important to understand the risks involved. The primary concern here is whether STDs can be transmitted through indirect contact with clothing, specifically underwear, that has been tried on by someone who may be infected.

Firstly, STDs like gonorrhea and human papillomavirus (HPV) are primarily transmitted through direct sexual contact. This means that the most common route of transmission is through skin-to-skin contact during sexual activities. While some infections can survive outside the human body for a limited time, the likelihood of contracting an STD through trying on underwear is quite low, especially if you are wearing your own undergarments underneath.

If you try on underwear while wearing your own underwear, the risk of transmission is significantly reduced. The fabric of your own underwear acts as a barrier, preventing direct contact with the fabric of the store's underwear. However, if there were any bodily fluids on the underwear that you tried on, there is a theoretical risk, albeit very low, that some pathogens could be transferred to your own underwear.
Regarding the concern about washing your underwear with other clothes after trying on store underwear, it's important to note that most bacteria and viruses do not survive well in the washing machine, especially when using hot water and detergent. Washing your clothes in a standard cycle should effectively remove any potential contaminants. However, if you are particularly concerned, you might consider washing the items separately or using a higher temperature setting.

In terms of specific STDs, gonorrhea and chlamydia are primarily transmitted through mucous membranes, and while they can survive for a short time on surfaces, the risk of transmission through clothing is minimal. HPV can also be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, but again, the risk from trying on underwear is low. Other STDs, such as HIV, are even less likely to be transmitted through clothing, as the virus does not survive long outside the human body.

It’s also worth noting that many stores have hygiene practices in place to minimize the risk of transmission. For example, some may sanitize items after they have been tried on, or they may have policies regarding the return of intimate apparel. If you are concerned about hygiene, you might want to ask the store staff about their practices.

In conclusion, while the theoretical risk of contracting an STD from trying on underwear exists, it is very low, especially if you are wearing your own underwear underneath. Practicing good hygiene, such as washing your clothes after trying on items, can further mitigate any potential risks. If you have ongoing concerns about STDs or specific symptoms, it is always best to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice and testing if necessary.
