Post-operative bleeding after hemorrhoid ligation?
Dr.
Ke, thank you for your response.
I have been experiencing blood in my stool from June 22 to June 25, which has lasted for four days.
One of the rubber bands for my internal hemorrhoid actually fell off the day after the ligation on June 22.
What I'm more concerned about now is the blood in my stool; it appears to be less bright red than the bleeding I experienced occasionally before the ligation.
It also seems to be mixed in with the stool.
Is this considered normal? The last time I had bleeding was seven months ago, and this current bleeding started after the ligation.
I am unsure if there might be a rectal issue.
I would greatly appreciate your assistance.
Thank you very much!

If you continue to experience bleeding after hemorrhoid ligation, please consult your physician promptly to prevent excessive bleeding that could lead to anemia.
As for whether it is a rectal issue, a colonoscopy is necessary to confirm.
Given that you are over 50 years old, it is advisable to undergo a colonoscopy if you have not had one in the past five years.

Post-banding bleeding after internal hemorrhoid treatment can be a concerning issue for patients, especially when it involves noticeable changes in the nature of the bleeding. In your case, it seems that you are experiencing blood in your stool four days after the rubber band ligation procedure, which is indeed a common concern among patients undergoing this treatment.
Firstly, it is important to understand that rubber band ligation is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat internal hemorrhoids. The procedure involves placing a rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid, cutting off its blood supply, and causing it to eventually fall off. While this method is generally effective, some bleeding can occur post-procedure as the tissue heals.
The fact that you are seeing blood in your stool after the procedure is not uncommon. However, the characteristics of the blood can provide important clues about what might be happening. Fresh, bright red blood typically indicates that the source of the bleeding is from the lower gastrointestinal tract, such as hemorrhoids or anal fissures. In contrast, darker blood mixed with stool may suggest that the bleeding is coming from higher up in the gastrointestinal tract, which could indicate other issues.
Given that you mentioned the blood appears to be mixed with stool and is not as bright red as before, it is essential to monitor this closely. The presence of blood mixed with stool could potentially indicate a more significant issue, such as a rectal or anal fissure, or even a complication from the ligation itself, such as a retained band or an infection.
In terms of what to expect, it is not unusual for some bleeding to occur after the procedure, especially if the ligation site is irritated or if there are bowel movements that put pressure on the area. However, if the bleeding persists, increases in volume, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as severe pain, fever, or changes in bowel habits, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
To address your concerns about whether this is normal or if there might be a rectal issue, it would be advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. They may recommend a physical examination or further diagnostic tests, such as a colonoscopy, to rule out any underlying conditions that may be contributing to the bleeding.
In the meantime, here are some general recommendations to help manage your symptoms and promote healing:
1. Dietary Adjustments: Ensure you are consuming a high-fiber diet to soften your stools and reduce straining during bowel movements. This can help minimize irritation to the surgical site.
2. Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids to help maintain stool consistency.
3. Avoid Straining: Try to avoid straining during bowel movements, as this can exacerbate bleeding and discomfort.
4. Warm Sitz Baths: Taking warm sitz baths can help soothe the area and promote healing.
5. Follow-Up Care: Keep all follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider to monitor your recovery and address any concerns.
In conclusion, while some bleeding after rubber band ligation can be expected, the nature and persistence of the bleeding you are experiencing warrant further evaluation. It is always better to err on the side of caution and consult with your healthcare provider to ensure that there are no complications and to receive appropriate care.
