There is a hard small lump near the temple?
Hello doctor, I seem to have felt this small ball (located between the temple and the ear, specifically in the upper part of the temple and in the middle of the ear) since I was in elementary school.
Recently, I touched it again, and it is still there.
It cannot be seen with the eyes; it can only be felt by pressing.
Is this normal? Is it also normal that it is only near the right ear and not near the left ear?

When it comes to the presence of a hard bump near the temple, especially one that has been there since childhood and is not visible but can be felt upon palpation, there are several considerations to keep in mind. First and foremost, it is essential to understand that the human body can have various benign structures that may feel like lumps or bumps. These can include lymph nodes, cysts, or even benign tumors such as lipomas or fibromas.
In your case, since you mentioned that this bump has been present since childhood and has not changed in size or caused any discomfort, it is likely a benign condition. Lymph nodes, for instance, can sometimes remain palpable even when they are not actively swollen or inflamed. They can be felt in various locations, including near the temples and jawline, and may vary in size and consistency from person to person.
The fact that you only feel this bump near your right ear and not on the left side is also not unusual. It is common for anatomical structures to be asymmetrical, meaning that one side of the body may have features that the other side does not. This asymmetry can be entirely normal and does not necessarily indicate a problem.
However, it is important to monitor the bump for any changes. If you notice an increase in size, tenderness, or any other concerning symptoms such as pain, redness, or drainage, it would be prudent to seek medical evaluation. A healthcare professional can perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to further assess the nature of the bump.
In summary, while the presence of a hard bump near the temple that has been stable over time is likely benign, it is always best to err on the side of caution. Regular self-examination and awareness of any changes are key. If you have any concerns or if the bump begins to change, do not hesitate to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They can provide reassurance and, if necessary, further diagnostic testing to ensure that everything is normal.
