Gastric ulcers and probiotics?

Recently, a family member experienced heartburn and was diagnosed with a Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric ulcer.
It has been noted that in recent years, Bifidobacterium has shown significant progress in the prevention and treatment of food allergies, gastritis (including gastric ulcers) caused by Helicobacter pylori, and ulcerative colitis.
I would like to ask: 1.
Does Bifidobacterium truly have an effect on Helicobacter pylori infection? 2.
Are the probiotics Myolysate and Bifidobacterium longum effective in the treatment of Helicobacter pylori as well?

MJ, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/07/03

Probiotics, particularly strains like Bifidobacterium, have garnered attention in recent years for their potential role in managing Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infections and associated gastrointestinal conditions, such as gastric ulcers. H. pylori is a gram-negative bacterium that colonizes the stomach lining and is a significant contributor to gastritis and peptic ulcers. The standard treatment for H. pylori typically involves a combination of antibiotics and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to eradicate the bacteria and promote healing of the gastric mucosa.

1. Effectiveness of Bifidobacterium Against H. pylori: Research indicates that probiotics, including Bifidobacterium, may have a beneficial role in the management of H. pylori infections. Some studies suggest that probiotics can help reduce the side effects associated with antibiotic therapy, such as diarrhea, and may enhance the eradication rates of H. pylori when used as an adjunct to standard treatment. The proposed mechanisms include the modulation of gut microbiota, enhancement of mucosal immunity, and competition with H. pylori for adhesion sites in the gastric epithelium. However, while there is promising evidence, it is essential to note that probiotics alone are not a substitute for antibiotic therapy. They should be considered as a complementary approach rather than a primary treatment.

2. Efficacy of Specific Probiotic Formulations: Regarding the specific probiotic formulations you mentioned, such as "妙利散" and "表飛鳴-樂散," the effectiveness of these products would depend on their specific strains and concentrations of probiotics. Some formulations may contain strains that have been studied for their effects on H. pylori, while others may not have sufficient evidence to support their use in this context. It is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider or a gastroenterologist to determine the appropriateness of these specific products in the treatment of H. pylori infections.

In summary, while probiotics like Bifidobacterium may offer some benefits in the context of H. pylori infections and gastric ulcers, they should not replace conventional antibiotic therapy. Instead, they can be used as an adjunct to improve treatment outcomes and minimize side effects. Always consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new treatment, especially in the context of an established infection like H. pylori. They can provide personalized recommendations based on the latest research and your specific health needs.
