Pregnancy and menstrual issues?
Doctor, I'm sorry to bother you.
I would like to ask about my girlfriend's situation.
Is this irregular menstruation, or could there be other symptoms? Her previous menstrual periods were from May 9 to May 14, April 3 to April 8, and February 18 to February 23.
We had intercourse on June 9, June 22, and June 23, always using condoms, and we checked to ensure they didn't break.
On June 28 (10 days late), we visited a gynecologist, who performed an ultrasound and a pregnancy test, both of which showed no pregnancy.
Then, on July 2 (14 days late), I also took two different brands of pregnancy tests at home, and both were negative.
During this time, she has experienced breast tenderness and increased discharge.
We use a menstrual tracking app, which indicated her period should arrive between June 18 and June 23.
Now it's July 9 (21 days late), and her period still hasn't come.
Could you please advise us on what might be happening? Is there a possibility of pregnancy, or could there be other symptoms?

Your girlfriend's previous menstrual cycles were as follows: last period from May 9 to May 14, the one before that from April 3 to April 8, and the one before that from February 18 to February 23.
We had sexual intercourse on June 9, June 22, and June 23, always using condoms, and we checked to ensure they did not break.
On June 28 (10 days late), we visited a gynecologist who performed an ultrasound and a pregnancy test, both of which indicated that she was not pregnant.
Then, on July 2 (14 days late), she also took two different brands of home pregnancy tests, both of which were negative.
During this time, she experienced breast tenderness and increased discharge.
We use a menstrual tracking app, which predicted her next period would be from June 18 to June 23.
Now, on July 9 (21 days late), her period still hasn't arrived.
We are seeking to understand what might be happening.
Is there a possibility of pregnancy, or could this be indicative of another issue?
Answer: On June 28, the ultrasound and pregnancy test were negative, and on July 2, the home tests were also negative.
This suggests that her irregular menstrual cycle is likely due to factors other than pregnancy.

More Info
Understanding irregular menstrual cycles and the associated concerns about pregnancy can be quite complex and often leads to anxiety. Based on the information provided, it appears that your girlfriend has experienced irregular menstrual cycles, with her last few periods occurring on 5/9-5/14, 4/3-4/8, and 2/18-2/23. You mentioned that you had sexual intercourse on 6/9, 6/22, and 6/23, using condoms that were checked for integrity. On 6/28, she visited a gynecologist for an ultrasound and pregnancy test, both of which returned negative results. Additionally, she performed home pregnancy tests on 7/2, using two different brands, and both were also negative.
Given that her period was expected around 6/18-6/23 but has not arrived as of 7/9, this indicates a delay of 21 days. The symptoms you described, such as breast tenderness and increased vaginal discharge, can be associated with both premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and early pregnancy. However, since multiple pregnancy tests have returned negative results, the likelihood of pregnancy is low.
Irregular menstrual cycles can be influenced by various factors, including stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, exercise, and underlying medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Stress, in particular, can significantly impact the menstrual cycle, leading to delays or missed periods. The body’s response to stress can disrupt the hypothalamus, which regulates hormones that control the menstrual cycle.
In your girlfriend's case, the combination of irregular periods and the recent stressors may be contributing to her delayed menstruation. It is also worth noting that some women experience changes in their menstrual cycle due to lifestyle factors, such as changes in diet, exercise, or sleep patterns. If she has been under increased stress or has made significant lifestyle changes, this could also explain the irregularity.
Since she has already consulted with a gynecologist and received negative pregnancy test results, it may be advisable for her to monitor her symptoms and menstrual cycle closely. If her period does not arrive soon or if she experiences additional concerning symptoms (such as severe pain, heavy bleeding, or other unusual symptoms), it would be prudent for her to follow up with her healthcare provider for further evaluation. This could include additional tests to rule out other potential causes of her symptoms, such as hormonal imbalances or other gynecological issues.
In summary, while the symptoms and irregularity in her menstrual cycle can be concerning, the negative pregnancy tests and the recent consultation with a healthcare provider suggest that pregnancy is unlikely. It is essential to consider the impact of stress and lifestyle factors on her menstrual health and to seek further medical advice if her symptoms persist or worsen.
