Root canal treatment abroad?

Hello, doctor.
I went to the dentist and was told that I have a cavity that has reached the nerve, requiring root canal treatment.
Since I was leaving the country that night and was worried about not having enough time, the dentist prescribed anti-inflammatory and pain relief medication for me.
However, the next day while abroad, I experienced unbearable tooth pain and had to see a local dentist.
After taking X-rays, they confirmed what the dentist in Taiwan said: I need a root canal treatment.
After deciding to proceed, the dentist informed me that the procedure was completed, but I need to return for a follow-up in 10 days.
Today, during the follow-up, the dentist mentioned that it would take a few months to fully heal, but I will be returning to Taiwan in 11 days.
I would like to ask if it is possible to find a dentist in Taiwan to continue the root canal treatment after I return home?

Yes, it is possible to complete root canal treatment after returning home, but there are several important considerations to keep in mind. Root canal therapy is a procedure designed to treat infection or damage to the pulp of a tooth, and it typically involves multiple steps. The first step usually includes cleaning out the infected pulp, shaping the root canals, and then filling them with a material called gutta-percha. Depending on the severity of the infection and the condition of the tooth, the treatment may be completed in one visit or may require multiple appointments.

If you have started the root canal treatment abroad and are unable to complete it before returning to Taiwan, it is crucial to ensure that the initial work done is stable and that the tooth is adequately sealed to prevent further infection. Here are some steps you should consider:
1. Consult Your Dentist: Before leaving, discuss your situation with the dentist who started the treatment. They can provide you with a summary of what has been done, any medications you may need, and specific instructions for care until you can see a dentist back home.

2. Temporary Filling: If your treatment was not completed, the dentist should place a temporary filling in the tooth to protect it until you can see your dentist in Taiwan. This is essential to prevent bacteria from re-entering the tooth and causing further infection.

3. Follow-Up Care: After returning to Taiwan, schedule an appointment with a local dentist as soon as possible. Bring any documentation from the dentist who started the treatment, including X-rays and notes on what procedures were performed. This information will help your local dentist understand the current state of your tooth and what needs to be done next.

4. Monitor Symptoms: Pay attention to any symptoms such as increased pain, swelling, or fever. If you experience any of these, seek dental care immediately, as they could indicate an infection or complication.

5. Completion of Treatment: Your local dentist will assess the situation and determine the best course of action. They may need to complete the root canal treatment, which could involve cleaning out the canals again, filling them, and placing a permanent restoration (like a crown) to protect the tooth.

6. Time Frame: The timeline for completing the root canal treatment can vary depending on the complexity of the case and the condition of the tooth. Generally, after the initial treatment, it may take a few weeks to a couple of months for the tooth to heal fully, but your dentist will provide a more accurate estimate based on your specific situation.

In summary, while it is feasible to complete root canal treatment after returning home, it is essential to ensure that the tooth is protected and to follow up with a local dentist promptly. Proper communication between your dentists and careful monitoring of your symptoms will help ensure a successful outcome.
