Genital issues?

Hello, I have some small, slightly white, bump-like lesions on both sides of my genital area near the pubic hair.
What could they be? They don't hurt when pressed, but I didn't think it was important before and sometimes washed that area carelessly.
Could it be due to poor hygiene habits?

Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/07/17

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, based on your symptom description, it is more likely that you are experiencing contact dermatitis or folliculitis.
It is advisable to maintain a light diet, have a regular daily routine, and keep the perineal area clean and dry.
Avoid wearing tight clothing.
You may try soaking in a bath while showering.
If symptoms persist, please consult a physician for diagnosis and treatment.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

More Info

When it comes to bumps near the pubic area, particularly those that resemble white pimples and are not painful when pressed, there are several potential causes to consider. It's important to note that while some conditions may be benign, others could require medical attention. Here’s a detailed overview of possible causes and concerns related to such bumps.

Possible Causes of Bumps Near the Pubic Area
1. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles, often caused by bacterial or fungal infections. It can appear as small red or white bumps and may be itchy or tender. Poor hygiene can contribute to the development of folliculitis, especially in areas where hair is present.

2. Sebaceous Cysts: These are non-cancerous lumps beneath the skin that can occur in various parts of the body, including the pubic area. They are typically small, round, and can be white or yellowish. Sebaceous cysts are usually painless unless they become infected.

3. Pearly Penile Papules: These are small, harmless bumps that can appear around the corona of the penis. They are normal anatomical variations and are not a sign of any disease. They are often mistaken for warts or other lesions but require no treatment.

4. Genital Warts: Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), genital warts can appear as small, flesh-colored or white bumps. They may be raised or flat and can sometimes be itchy or uncomfortable. If you suspect genital warts, it’s advisable to consult a healthcare provider for diagnosis and potential treatment.

5. Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV): If the bumps are accompanied by other symptoms such as itching, burning, or pain, they could be indicative of a herpes outbreak. Herpes lesions typically appear as painful blisters that eventually crust over.

6. Lichen Planus: This is an inflammatory condition that can affect the skin and mucous membranes, leading to the development of itchy, flat-topped bumps. It can occur in the genital area and may require treatment if symptomatic.

Hygiene and Care
You mentioned that your hygiene habits may not have been optimal. While poor hygiene can contribute to some skin conditions, it is not the sole cause of bumps in the pubic area. Regular washing with mild soap and water can help prevent infections and maintain skin health. However, over-washing or using harsh soaps can irritate the skin and exacerbate certain conditions.

When to Seek Medical Attention
If the bumps persist, change in appearance, or are accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, itching, or discharge, it is crucial to seek medical advice. A healthcare provider, particularly a dermatologist or urologist, can perform a thorough examination and may recommend tests to determine the exact cause of the bumps. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent complications and provide peace of mind.

Conclusion
In summary, while bumps near the pubic area can arise from various benign conditions, it is essential to monitor their characteristics and any accompanying symptoms. Maintaining good hygiene is important, but if you have concerns about the bumps or if they change in appearance, consulting a healthcare professional is the best course of action. They can provide a definitive diagnosis and appropriate treatment options tailored to your specific condition.
