There is swelling on the right side of the throat?
Hello Doctor, I feel like there is something in my throat, specifically on the right side near my jaw (about the area where doctors press when diagnosing a sore throat during a cold).
I visited a clinic today, and the doctor felt a soft lump about 2 cm in size, mentioning it is related to my immune system.
There is not much swelling in my throat, just a bit of fluid accumulation that doesn't hurt when pressed, and it doesn't hurt when I eat either.
The doctor advised me to avoid acidic and cold foods.
However, I am still a bit worried it could be something like cancer...
I wanted to clarify things further.
The doctor prescribed Panadol 500 and IZAN 100 mg to be taken four times a day for three days.
Here is a photo I took: https://imgur.com/a/QdX24Na.
I feel like I have some post-nasal drip, phlegm, and a slight sore throat, similar to the stinging sensation I get when I have a cold and drink water or eat, but I haven't particularly noticed pain, just a bit of warmth in my throat.
Eating is normal, but I do have a sore spot in my mouth that my teeth rub against, making it hard to bite down.
Recently, I've been commuting, and the train is so cold it makes me feel nauseous, then it gets hot outside at over 30 degrees...
I have never consumed betel nut, smoked, or drank alcohol.
However, when I open my mouth, it feels a bit stiff, and when I open it comfortably, it tilts to the right.
To correct it, I hear a popping sound, and sometimes I have to use my hand to gently pull it back.
I'm not sure if this is related...
I would like to ask if, as the clinic doctor said, this is just a fluid accumulation, or if there are other possibilities.
Should I go directly to a major hospital for further examination, or should I finish the medication first? Thank you!

Hello: Please finish the medication prescribed by the clinic.
If you have concerns, you can continue to return for check-ups.
If necessary, the clinic physician will refer you to the hospital for further examination.

More Info
Understanding right-sided throat swelling can be concerning, especially when accompanied by symptoms such as a sensation of something being stuck in the throat, post-nasal drip, and discomfort. Based on your description and the examination by your doctor, it seems that the swelling you are experiencing is likely related to a benign condition rather than something more serious like cancer.
The soft, 2 cm swelling you mentioned could be indicative of several potential causes, including:
1. Lymphadenopathy: Swelling of the lymph nodes in response to infection or inflammation is common. This could be due to a recent viral infection, such as a cold or flu, which can lead to swollen lymph nodes in the neck and throat area.
2. Tonsillitis or Pharyngitis: Inflammation of the tonsils or throat can cause swelling and discomfort. Even if you do not have severe pain, mild inflammation can still lead to a feeling of fullness or swelling.
3. Allergic Reactions: Allergies can cause swelling in the throat and lead to post-nasal drip, which you mentioned. This can occur due to environmental allergens or food sensitivities.
4. Cyst or Abscess: A benign cyst or an abscess (a collection of pus) can form in the throat area, leading to localized swelling. These are usually not cancerous but may require drainage if they become infected.
5. Muscle Tension or Spasms: Given your mention of jaw discomfort and the sensation of your mouth opening unevenly, muscle tension in the neck and throat area could also contribute to the feeling of swelling.
Your doctor’s recommendation to avoid acidic and cold foods is sensible, as these can sometimes exacerbate throat discomfort. The medications prescribed, Panadol (paracetamol) for pain relief and IZAN (an antihistamine), should help alleviate any discomfort and reduce swelling if it is related to allergies or inflammation.
Regarding your concerns about cancer, while it is natural to worry, the characteristics of the swelling you described—soft, non-painful, and associated with recent symptoms of a cold—are not typical of malignancy. Cancerous swellings are usually hard, fixed, and may be associated with other systemic symptoms such as weight loss, night sweats, or persistent pain.
As for whether to go to a larger hospital for further evaluation, it may not be necessary at this point. If your symptoms do not improve after completing the prescribed medication, or if they worsen (such as increasing pain, difficulty swallowing, or breathing issues), then seeking further evaluation would be prudent.
In the meantime, you might consider the following:
- Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids to help thin mucus and soothe the throat.
- Humidification: Using a humidifier can help keep the throat moist and reduce irritation.
- Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong odors, and other irritants that can exacerbate throat discomfort.
If you continue to experience symptoms like post-nasal drip, throat discomfort, or if you notice any new symptoms, it would be wise to follow up with your healthcare provider for further assessment. They may consider imaging studies or referrals to specialists if necessary.
In summary, while your symptoms may be concerning, they are more likely related to benign conditions rather than cancer. Monitoring your symptoms and following your doctor's advice is the best course of action at this time.
